@hein24, shap tjomma, as i said, once i get the ones from SAMB, you can collect them as well, by doing this, you will have a very strong breeding group.

    Hi Vez,

Looks like you have a serious bout of Endler disease. I want you to look at this website: http://www.swampriveraquatics.com/

If we don't hear from you again, then I know you have had a heart attack and are in guppy heaven.

Take care boet, hope you recover soon, measure your temperature regularly.... if it goes up when you see Endlers, you know that this is serious.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

You can also cross Endlers with normal guppies and get very beautiful hyrbids:

Crosses with Spaten gold guppies will give you Tiger Endlers:

Crosses with Japan blues will give you these beauties:

    @Dirk Bellstedt

I had a look at the link you provided. I have some "normal LPS guppies" in my community tank, and one of the fry has grown up and looks VERY similar to this one:

I realise that it would not be an exact same (if Blue Glass Lace (Y-Lace, X-Blue Glass) is a purebreed?) but it's interesting that this gene is coming through a few generations later. The mom and dad, and even granparents just looked like normal "cheapy guppies".
Now I am interested to see what would happen if I were to put this male with one of your female endlers.....!

    Hi Ashley,

I am presently doing some experimental crossbreeding with guppies and Endlers. The first generation crosses look like something halfway between the two parents and some of the colour patterns are often hidden in these first generation crosses so they do not look very promising at that stage. However, what you need to do is to cross the first generation fishes (F1 generation we call these) with one another and then you get random combinations of genes in the second generation (F2 we call these) and this is when things get interesting. After that you start selecting for the colour combinations that you may want or like and if you again just breed them amongst one another you can "fix" the strain as one calls it (it means that the offspring that they will produce look like the parents) and then you have a new strain.

I have some Endler guppy x normal guppy in the F2 generation and I have some very interesting lyretails with Endler colours coming along quite nicely. I must post some pics soon.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    hi Dirk.

if i may ask, do you use the female guppy with a male endler when your are doing the cross breeding?

Wow you guys got all my attention, @Dirk Bellstedt please keep us posted with your findings I am currently starting to experiment with Hybrids as well, I cant wait to see the results and the findings.

    Kind Regards

    Aha!

With regard to your question about which one should be the male and which one should be the female, you need to know more about the genetics of guppies and how these characters (in genetics we talk about "traits") are inherited. Color in guppies is inherited via the sex determining chromosome to a large extent (the Y chromosome) so it is a matter of WYSIWYG, but there are other traits such as swords and certain body patterning which is inherited via the females. So, you cannot just start doing this, you need to do your home work and this is where it gets complicated, you need to do some reading up and you need to know a little more about the science of genetics.

    Will post some pics soon.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

eish, @hein24, dink ons moes meer oplet in NAS????en ek in biol...LOL

Thanks dirk, do recall some x and y stuff in biology,
and that some characteristics are according to who has the stronger gene?, don’t know the English for this, and hope the spelling is correct, “resesief”?? meaning the strongest gene will dominate over the weaker one? Thus inheriting that characteristics..

It sounds like you have been digging in these little fish for a while, if I may ask, how do the DNA look between the two, Guppy and Endler, any obvious difference?

sounds like its not just "hooking" two fish, and you get some crosses, do you perhaps have a site, or a link, so that we can understand a bit more?

    regards.

    Ja boet,

Die biologie onnie het gesê jy moet oplet in die klas en wat het jy gedoen, jy het biologie beoefen deur na die girls te kyk!

Yes, the English term is recessive and dominant, the dominant gene dominates the recessive gene and you do not see the effects of the recessive gene.

This is also the case in the snakeskin guppy that Ashley showed us. The snakeskin gene is recessive and you need a combination of these genes to give you the snakeskin pattern. These were obviously recessively present in the two parents and then combined to give us Ashley's "super snakeskin".

Yes, I have been reading up about guppies and with my background in genetics this makes things a lot easier as this stuff is pretty heavy. A recent publication on this topic had the following title: Genetic linkage map of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, and quantitative trait loci analysis of male size and colour variation Proc. R. Soc. B (2009) 276, 2195–2208. This would be enough to chase you away for a while.......

Heres a nice pic of the paper in which the arrows and numbers indicate which of the different colour markings are controlled by which genes. It is actually interesting to see that all those tiny different dots and markings are genetically controlled, this is really wonderful to think how complex but elegant this is all is.:

    Guppy linkage map pic.jpg

Even if you had a site or a link, you would still need to have a good set of basic genetics in place and then you might have to do some studying again.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that there are certainly differences in the DNA of Endler guppies and normal guppies which is also why they are called Poecilia wingei and Peocilia reticulata, but they can obviously produce fertile offspring as we have certainly discussed now.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Shjoe okay eks nog verlore by die boil girls in skool hahaha maar die is nou cool.. Thanks @Dirk Bellstedt for this. This artical is very breath taking lol.. Man and then they said guppy breeding was easy but I guess its the generics which complicates things a bit. Well as complicated as it all sounds I still wanna take part in this lol. My endlers and Guppies better watch out I'm comming for them hahahaha.
