You got me quite excited there with your photo, but if you compare with one of Tyrone's previous posts I am not to sure any more. The tail coloration just does not look right. Might be a hybrid?

Everyone in Clogville may keep as little "Spirulina" for private use... :blink1:

    A quicke reply from Clogville!

Gavin, I do not think that those guppies are Endlers.

For good info have a look at this site (although this is another guy that can't spell....). http://www.swampriveraquatics.com/

    No Spirulina here, just beer.....

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Hi Guys,

Gavin send me a PM to reply, but I thought it would be good if I replied here, so that all of you would be informed. There has been a lot of information about this guppy in my German Aquarium Mag, Die Aquarium und Terrarium Zeitschrift.

Endler's Guppies, Poecilia wingei, were scientifically described in 2005. The females do not differ from normal guppies, Poecilia reticulata, but the males do. The males are smaller, have a prominent black dot on their sides and the males have a golden or silvery sheen over much larger parts of their body than normal guppies do. The black dot is formed by a black pigment forming region, which is in the middle of the body just above the gonopodium.

Endler guppies were introduced to Germany and Holland around 2000 and have now been selected for various colour forms as can be seen on the link that I posted earlier. Most still possess a prominent black dot on their sides but in some selections this has been selected against. The ones I have do not have prominent dot but have the very distinct golden sheen, very pretty. The males are smaller than normal guppies and mine are 2.5 cm. Mine do not eat their fry at all. See attached pic.

Endler's were also extensively hybridized with normal guppies, but most still have the prominent black dot. Snakeskin types have been crossed with Endler's and I have some of these. They do eat their young just like normal guppies. Many of these hybrids have been imported into Singapore and are now being sold as Endler's but they are hybrids, I would only trust fishes that come from Germany or Holland as being pure.

Your guppies look very pretty and I would for that reason not even think of getting rid of them. However, they do not have the Endler sheen and the dots are not in the right place. I would refer to them as more of less wild-type guppies.

Hope this helps to clarify the matter.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Thanx for the clarification Dirk - much appreciated

I must mention that these wild types I have. also do not eat their fry - maybe there is some endler gene hidden away..........
I received the balance of the wild types and some of the males have a lyretail as long as their body - absolutely stunning, when I can get a decent pic, I will post

@Zafgak ... the tyretail that you are referring to does it look anything like this - got it from a LFS on Friday it seems like an importer has had a mixed delivery of Sri Lanka guppies that might have had some endler in them at some stage.

Admittedly a very pretty guppy, but no sign of Endler there, no sheen and the dot is not in the right place.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Endlers ?

    Hi Prof

Will you say these are endlers or not? Not sure if you can tell by these pics.

These are about the 4th generation and all 100 or more of them look about the same with some differences in the black markings.

Man its hard to photograph these buggers.

    Hi Vis,

Yes, in my opinion these are Endler's. I have also tried to photograph these buggers and they are difficult. The trick is that you say to them you want to photograph the plants behind them and then they relax, which is why my pic is in focus....

Well, all jokes aside, you would see that they are similar but perhaps not quite identical. These fishes are inbred and minor differences exist between strains. There are minor differences between strains from different sources, but the black dots and the black line as well as the gold colour which is much more intensive than that of normal guppies is characteristic of Endler guppies. Remember that Endler guppies are a separate species called Peocilia wingei and should not be kept with normal guppies as they can hybridize.

Are yours also very prolific? I think that there are offspring of mine all over SA by now as Gareth has been distributing them very merrily.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Yes I have to get rid of bucket loads of them at a time :)

Thanks for the reply. Theres actually a male that looks different from the others but it may be because he is still a little young. His orange has been replaced by the gold that runs from the head. His siblings all look like the photos though.

They have never been mixed with other guppies.

    Nice Vis,

If you want to "fix" the strain of this male that only has gold instead of the red, then you get him to mate with one of his sisters and then you mate him back to his daughters. You could then mate him to his granddaughters again. In this way the offspring that you get contain more and more genes of the father and eventually you would also get offspring that would look like their dad. The technical term for this is "line breeding" which is commonly used in breeding guppies. Much fun.....

I should actually get some of these guppies from you, we need to make a plan, I will be in touch by PM.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

O heavens, there is no telling which one that is now :) Had to move them into one tank as they took over all the other tanks. They have in the meantime probably mated themselves.

Have an idea how big the females should be by now so will take one of them and try after they have stopped producing offspring.

I'm guessing this is why I read a while back that someone wanting to make their own line of guppies needs so many tanks?
    They are beautiful fish however!

It's a pity that some of those hillbilly towns don't make such beautiful people. (Sorry... I couldn't resist.)

Photo of the gold one. That " I am taking a photo of the plant behind you is not working :) "

With one of his brothers. They kind of pick on him too.
