One thing that’s confused me a little is the monthly shoppers - my family has always done a massive monthly shop, then weekly we do the fresh stuff. But last week we got lots of dirty looks for what obviously looked like panic buying. But screw that, thick skin and the rest you know. But we are a family of three - what happens for the families that legitimately require large amounts on a regular basis? In some cases, three loaves of bread for example just aren’t enough for a week. How do those people manage?

We have that issue now, my brother and his fiance just recently moved back in with us, so we've gone from 3 to 5 adults and now we also need to buy more of everything like loaves (plural) and milk and all that.

We do shopping weekly on a Sunday. We went on Sunday before the lock down was announced, my wife went again on the Monday just after the lockdown was announced and then my mom in law went on the Tuesday and bought us lots of groceries so we should be sorted for the duration I think

I am really glad it is just me and my Mrs in our home.
Our lives have not changed much so far during the lock down.
Although she has all the necessary permits and permissions, as she is working in an essential field, she is able to do most of her work from home.
She has left home twice since the lock down started.

We usually buy milk for the month in bulk, and had someone complaining that we had 5 boxes of long life milk in our shopping trolley.
Fortunately the management and tellers at our local Spar know us, as we have been shopping there for almost 20 years, and they know when we shop, and often even what we buy, and they were able to tell the complainant that it was our regular monthly shopping.
One of our favourite tellers will often ask us if we're not buying this or that. It has helped us over the years when we have forgotten something.
It also shows how predictable and boring we are.

What surprised me was the amount of empty shelves the day before the lock down came into effect.
The shelves were literally empty, with a lot of things being bought that made no sense to me.
No tomato, mustard, chilli and other sauces. No maize meal, flour and other dry goods. No meat, fish or chicken. No sausages or cold meats.
Tinned goods shelves were also empty. Do people really eat that much tinned vegetables, asparagus and other tinned things?
No candles, globes, batteries or paraffin.
What was even more surprising was that the liquor section was completely sold out of brandy, whiskey, beer, cold drinks and most of the other types of liqueurs only had a few bottles on the shelves.
Do people really drink that much?

Buying toilet paper at Woolworths I felt like a criminal because I had a packet of 18 rolls under my arm. (Their 2 ply is the softest, and my posterior appreciates it more than the sandpaper some shops sell.)
We turned around at our local Makro, as I wasn't prepared to stand in line for more than an hour just to get my monthly cigarette fix.
4 hours later my Mrs happened to drive past there again, and she was in and out within 10 minutes, with my cigarettes, together with a few other necessities. She was one of the only shoppers in the store at that stage.

    Lucky they know you, haha.

I get some of the strange items - I went to a checkers and saw there was no flour at all, but down the next aisle they were doing a bread demo - so everyone was buying the ingredients to limit the lockdown shopping. I think that also led to a bit of an increase in buying things like tomato sauce and the like as people would have been making rolls and things with the same recipe.

The booze was a dog show. I decided I’m not drinking for the lockdown (sucked on Saturday since it was my birthday but oh well) but it’s one of those things I think people knew they would be braaing more, so drinking more and so on. Cigarettes though.. well I stocked up the day after lockdown was announced, and the day they said tobacco wouldn’t be sold I went with a friend to get his.. it was an absolute dog show. To the point the tellers weren’t even ringing up correctly.. he scored 5 cartons for the price of 2

WFH make me notice when there's shrimplets. Judging on the size this is a different shrimp as the one i posted in my thread.

But that's exactly what has happened to us
I didn't see the need to stock pile now... I have been out twice and shelves are empty
No fruit except apples... not a yoghurt.. and various other essential items..

I found two fresh markets that are now obviously closed to walk ins, but are doing deliveries instead. Have all their licenses and what not. So we decided we will just order our fruit and veg from them (one does fresh fruit and frozen berries and what not and the other does veg) and it gets dropped off the next day. It’s actually really helpful since I’m going through massive amounts of fruit at the moment doing a bit of a training regime before (hopefully) the hockey season I wasn’t going to be playing but now I am kicks off.

But tomorrow I get the chance to adventure to the shops.. we have a house raffle going for the chance to get out

I went grocery shopping yesterday. No problems at all. Got everything on my wife's very extensive list, there were very few people in the shop, in and out in 15 minutes.

I stood in line at the shop for about 45 min this morning (first time I’ve ever been excited to wait in line I might add) and it was nice and sunny. I never leave the house without my cap and shades though so I was fine... but I did have the thought... how many people are going to end up with mask tans????

I also think that as things settle now and all the panic buying is over, stores will get the chance to replenish stock and things should become available again as well as less busy

I don't wanna scratch where it isn't itchy but how's everyone taking the extended lockdown?
