@TankMaster there are too many to mention, mainly marine reef species

 

Okay. Most are CITES controlled and others that aren't, are not threatened.

Poaching does happen. There's no doubt. We see it locally.

On the topic of local. One can apply for a permit to collect wild marine specimens, for aquariums, at the post office.

There are obviously limits to what you can and cannot collect. There are also protected areas that have a ban on collection.

I'm perfectly happy with me WC senegalus, fortunately they are mostly captive bred nowadays.

 

My first fish were wild caught endlers

I collected them myself from a stream. I must have been 10 years old at the time.

I have some mosquitofish females from a vlei. Invasive pests..

 

I'm not certain and it could be a mis-ID but they were definitely not Gambusia.

Males had the characteristic black spots/bars and were really nicely coloured. What I do remember is catching mostly males and just a few females. I also spotted some mud crabs there too.

I live in Durban. The stream is literally across the road from me. I haven't been there since I was a kid and I don't plan to. It's not as clean as it used to be and it's really overgrown.

Maybe the population has survived over the years?

Yeah and this is the problem with most natural waterways, we either damn it up, used as a flush or destroy everything around it.

Amazed how quickly farm run-off kills aquatic life - few pigs here, some herbicide and nothing is alive down stream, yet 200m upstream it is crystal clear and one finds life. I think we have done and continue to do more harm with deforestation and the like than what gets taken legitimately for the hobby. The how they are taken is of more concern to me ...



Surely this is better than say using toxins to catch them ..
