it is illegal to move any fish from any body of water to another body of water - technically buy fish at teh LFS and driving them home without a permit is illegal

And if they stop you shoot them.the fine is only R2000.00 for shooting people as opposed to R10 000.00 for illegally transporting fish.:p

Now that sounds ridiculous, but the ecological damage that can be done by introducing fish to another body of water is generally a more serious issue than the death of some people, IMO :blink1:

    LOL
Yes,true and i am glad that people on this site knows or can be educated about the dangers because there just is not enough inspectors/civil servants to do it,or they just do not have the required knowledge.

The above post was just a poke at them.:boxing:

Ironically, my interest in perhaps becoming one of the people who do ecological research and conservation may lead to my demise because of that very post, lol.

I didn't know the fines for those two crimes, and you raise a valid point... Thanks for that.

I have seen them lately at the petshops and they are quite pricey, keeping in mind that some of our ecosystems are already invaded by them, and all that you need to get hold of then is to cast a line!!

If i am correct the Orange river system has not been invaded as yet,but most other systems are.

No jokes but my linefish at ocean basket tonight was tilipaia form mozambique :) and it was good. Just be careful if those are blue kurper(mozambique tilipia) they easily reach sizes over 1kg and need large areas to swim its cheaper catching them than buying them :) just get a freshwater permit abt R60 a year to fish wheter u eat or remove u can take out abt 20+ tilipia a day

I don't know why you'd pay a decent price for them... they're common in most rivers, ponds and dams nationwide, and besides that, they're avaliable commercially as both food fish and as ornamentals, never exceeding R100 (even for big specimens).

I kept a few a little while back. While only the males ever look nice, their personality and willingness to breed made them worthwhile pets.

Depending on the reason for the collection of the fish there would be two different people to contact. One for Scientific and the other for recreation. At Cape Nature speak to Danelle @ 021 659 3416/3418/3420 or Email: dkleinhans@capenature.co.za for scientific call Dean or Marissa at 021 866 8000. Hope this helps.
