YES the 700L was 1500x600x800 and had a double base heavy as #$#^#%$

 

from that i went to 1500x600x600 but it only had one beast in it my +-30cm Zonatus.

 

All good points. Substrate is probably the biggest hidden expense for me, followed by ferts. It quite quickly stacks up. While CO2 is definitely a big help for plant growth and health, I've had pretty great success from my low-tech setups. Maintenance is something that seems to have differing opinions - some people love to do it and find it quite therapeutic, others find it a nuisance. I'm definitely in the 2nd camp. I can only imagine the effort to maintain a large, high-tech, densely planted tank

You can go way big on planted tanks. Go all out riozome plants. No plant substrate needed. If you can afford the glass box you can afford the ferts.

I have a hole drilled in the back near the top which my piping connects to. It then has a filter on it. Tiny fry sometime do go through and I find them in the sump (only 3 so far and I have been breeding using this setup since April - probably somewhere between 100 and 200 fish) but they are so small they dont get stuck so I can fish them out and put them back in their grow tank. This doesnt happen often as I have a rock in each tank with a java fern on it as well as some moss - the fry prefer to hide in the moss or near the fern rather than on the surface so they dont really get sucked out often. Once they reach about 3 weeks old they cant fit through the filter anymore.

 

Went 2foot to 3foot to 5foot, in less than a year

 

I went from a 40l to 240l to 800l. Then in about a month added one 25l and three 70l tanks as well haha

i have a had a fish bowl since i was a child so my time scale is a bit skewed
first tank i bought myself was a 4 foot at 16 at the time it was a huge tank and bought it especially to have a oscar.
got a 90x60x60 for my 21st and at the time thought the water volume was giant lol
got a 180x80x70 1000ltr a year later and been 15 years of never ending cycle of selling, trading, and diying
