Is your thermometer accurate? I don't believe Eheim is much different (and yes I own Eheim) that the cheapies, but you can calibrate the Eheim heater by a couple of degrees either way, I just find the Eheims are so loooong and soooo expensive.

my 3ft has a 150watt set t 29 the water temp is a constant 26.5, measured with those stick on sticker things the glass floating cheapies and digital medical grade thermometer would go 26.5 to 26.0, was curious so me and a mate did some experimenting, heater is a aquaclear i think.

So none of the guys who turn their heaters off in summer want to argue with me? No, but seriously, I am interested in whether heaters do draw current even when their thermostat has them switched off..

@RoGe, I have also never switched off in Summer, firstly because I am scared of fluctuations and rather be safe than sorry and second as you say, I would think that if heater doesnt switch on, I am not using current so... yes... would be interesting to hear as well if I am wrong

Most heaters work on a thing called a bi-metal strip , this strip will engage & dis-engaged at certain temperatures...so , with the heater is off , the bi-metal strip didn't engage & it does NOT draw current...This from a electrician's point off view

With the small tank I've got I never switch the heater of because of the fluctuations that can happen in a small tank. The part of Pretoria where I stay get extremely hot. My 1200L tank is already at 28 to 29 deg and drops to 26 and 27 through the night. On the cold days it might drop to 24 after 4 days of cold weather over December and January the tank can reach about 32 deg without a heater and then there is madness in my tank
