@Ane not all fish sleep at the bottom of the tank.

As a rule of thumb, i think i can safely say that most fish that are middle to bottom dwellers sleep at the bottom of the tank
Fish that are mid to upper dwellers although they might retreat to between your plants or a favorite are of the tank, they dont usually go to the bottom

If i think of it... a lot of cichlids sleep at the bottom
Oscars, severums, geos... all sleep at bottom
Yet my blue acaras sleep hidden in the plants
Arowanas, my flagtail which is a characin, quieten down at night but always stay in the top part of the tank

Maybe others can chime in but this is my experience...

I think some fish just have different spots they like to rest in, like humans. As an example if find a bed the most unpractical thing ever made for sleeping - good hammock or couch, that works for me .. I have some guppies that like to rest on the bolbitis leaves etc all in the same tank.

All 5 I bought died within 2 weeks. They aren't too strong.

My tetras hide in the corner of the tank at the bottom, my barbs and paradise fish just quieten down in their tank and my ancient fish throw a freaking party!

I get the feeling that the guppies, for sale at most of the lfs in SA, have a problem. I see a tendency that a lot of people have the fish dying within the first 2 weeks. The last guppy and endler I bought was a year ago. The male endler is still alive, female guppy was returned to lfs about 2 months ago as I didn't need her anymore for breeding. Is this just my luck or is there something that has gone bad with the fish supplied to lfs?

Guppies from what I have seen hate water changes - or let me be more correct parameter changes - be it temperature, ph even quality or water. If they are living in green water do not move them to a clear water tank even if they are at the same temp - some will die. The number of guppies the LFS's loose are very very high - that is why guys are selling the humble guppy for R25 - R35 rand a pop just to be greedy and recover on stock loss.

The guppie/endlers I'm talking about is what I am using in the guppy challange. I normaly do a 50% wc, once a week, directly from the tap. Tanks are not heated and temp at 20/21 and doesn't drop by more than a degree when doing wc. Must also just mention that the stocking levels are very low in each tank, have about 15 adult and 40 fry spread over 12 tanks. It migh be as you mentioned about water quallity and the fact that during a short period they get moved from 3 different types, supplier/lfs/client. This can then be the biggest factor and not the quality of fish supplied.

I think guppies are pretty weak already though. But the transport stress kills many fish

Same here. Their fry seems fine but the adults I originally bought are long gone.

I doubt it. It's generally wide-spread - everyone that has bought guppies has had the same problem. Usually the fry survive and live longer than their parents who have been bought from an LFS. I think someone needs to look into it and figure out why this is happening.

After f-fish mentioned about them wanting stable water conditions it might be the biggest, but not only, contrabuting factor.

I have been at Pet Stop when they receive fish, from suppliers. Normally the bags with guppies are over filled, imo. I don't know if this is done intentionally.

If I look at it logically and look at the conditions they are raised in it kind of makes sense. Breed in bulk, feed cheap to keep costs down, over stock the tanks and water quality not too clean all the way, then they won't be too healthy once they reach us in the first place. They also don't live long to begin with... They also don't give outside signs as readily as say discus for example so it's hard to tel a good fish from a bad one as guppies can tolerate some really miff conditions before they show it. The solution is simple for me. Buy males and females, let them do what they do best and focus on the fry from there on. Or get some from someone that's breeding them non commercially.

What @BoelderBeestie said - cheap food. It's like feeding your boerboel cheap food - in the end, it will have a lot of health problems. The pups grow fast in their first 6 months - I owned one myself - I had to feed her expensive food 3 times a day for the first 6 months then cut down to twice a day until she was a year old.

Sounds righ to me @BoelderBeestie I have no problems with my fry at the moment. Move them from spawning tank to grow-out tank to sexed grow-out tank with a net without problems. Although my water perameters should be almost the same, havn't tested though

For those interested parties, a simple pool ph tester works wonderfully!!!

On the left is my tank water - the right is tap water from the river (both are ph only bec there is no chlorine in river water, so I'd ignore the chlorine section)[IMG]
