What decides whether Malawi fry/juveniles are male or female?

well there is a tendency amongst wild fish to change sex. I can remember from university biology that some species do change sex in a school of fish. I know clownfish does aswell as red steenbras but i am scraping the barrel of my knowlegde from biology 111 at university they call it progantry and protogyny. one is change from male to female and other female to male. if memory serves correct it sometimes holds correlation towards loss of dominant male in group of females.there the dominant female will leave group and return as male. Prof Bellstedt should be able to help.

quick question guys what temp do normaly run your tanks for peacock cichlids?

 

well it depend what you want them to do

but I would say between 25c - 28c the warmer I would suggest more flow “oxygen"

then the above temp is fine...because you go lower if you dont want to force the fish to breed as breeding is seasoned in the wild ......but would not go lower than 23 iesh
