What Apistogramma species are you keeping??

That's a young male (which is why he's so small). If you have a look at the dorsal and anal fins...you'll notice the "streamers" starting to grow out (specially in the 1st and 2nd photos you'll notice it clearly on the dorsal). The female's fins aren't pointy at all...will take some snaps of my apistos tonight

 

@23skyline, I agree with @Deadpool. It is a young male A. cacatuoides, very similar to the ones I have, except mine are now a very nice size already, and nearing breeding condition. I got mine from PetStop in Gezina, Pretoria. Maybe you can give them a call and find out if they still have some left. I don't have a multitude of tanks, but I would succumb and set up two tanks or so just to keep more Apistos. I am looking for trifasciata, agassizi, hongsloi and panda, but the only way to get good quality stock will be to do a special import, and I am not ready for that.

Can you put different types into one tank.

 

No...you cant even put more than one pair of the same species in a tank. Unless you go huge...6ft plus with a crap load of hiding places, and only certain types. Your best option will be a harem in a 4ft plus tank. Single male plus 1 female per 2ft (only for the less aggressive apistos)

The general rule of thumb (not set in stone, just a generalisation) your slender, more torpedo apistos (i.e. trifasciata, agassizii, etc) are less aggressive than your bulkier apistos (i.e. cacs, inkas, etc). Trifasciata for instance I breed as a harem...cacs...as pairs ONLY and even then the males beat up on the female

 

and if you only do males

 

Short answer...NO, you cant mix apistos!! These aren't tetras...or barbs. They are highly territorial towards other apistos (they leave other fish, even my micros alone) and a mix of them will end badly!!

The only apisto I would recommend you having more than one male in a tank (if there are NO females) will be Trifasciata. They are the least aggressive of the apistos and it helps having active dithers as well. They flare at each other, but that's about it...just remember you still need a big tank so they can have their own little territories (see my youtube video on the previous page)

 

Think "Cichlasoma" in 2-3 inch size, that is more or less what these are. They are cichlids through and through, only in a small package. But apart from the aggression, it is also the character, intelligence, beautiful colouration and mating behaviour. That is why they are so interesting and entertaining to keep. Not to mention tank size as an issue for larger cichlids. So basically, if you are into cichlids, but can only afford/accommodate an 80 cm tank, Apistos have all the mojo at half the size.

 

I currently have 2 Trifasciata males in a 2foot. Looking to add a 4 foot, so just checking what can be done.

These are my 4 Cacatuoides...love them more than the discus in my tank ...were so shy and skittish the first few months and wouldnt eat anything for over a month when I got them...now they are out in front all the time and eat like pigs...dont bother each other at all, but tend to chase the Discus now and then...only fish they are afraid of are the Siamese Algae Eaters :/

Lucky...my LFS has ordered them in for me 3 times now from suppliers and never come with the shipment.

 

Spotted him in a breeding cage at my lfs. Luckily just around the corner from me, never expected him to be at that shop!

@Deadpool reading your comments above about Cacatuoides aggression...do you think it's possible mine would have taken out my electric blue rams?

My 2 Rams had been settled for over a year , but one dissapeared over a month ago and found the second one dead last week...no idea why and it's bugged me...now you have me thinking maybe it was the Apistos

 

you guys making me think of getting some apistos now I have a 3foot just sitting empty

Not a bad idea. But be warned, the Apisto bug bites quite hard.
