Water Change routine

Essentially if you have enough of the correct filtration for the size of tank you have, then it should not be nessesary to add any type of additives for water changes, since their should be more than enough essential bacteria in the tank already, to handle the water change. Make sure you always wash and clean the filter sponges and other washable filter media in a bucket of tank water, this way you maintain all the good bacteria on the media.

 

Use it as directed on the bottle. It will help establish your bacteria colony. You do not need to use it once your bacteria is established and if you have proper filtration and media. Even with my large 80 to 90% water changes it is not needed. It will also not help for green water or algae.

Salt will not remove chlorine or chloramine. With very small water changes on large tanks and with less sensitive fish you may get away with not adding a product to remove chlorine and chloramine. But as a rule it is most certainly not reccommended as chlorine and chloramine effects on fish and filter bacteria are well documented.

 

Thanks... in this tank the question is more why are they doing so well. Snails are blessing and a curse, manual removal seems to work the best - even if it is with baited traps. Trap them early and check you feeding - snails boom when they have loads of food.
