Haha, it's your own fault for showing a me pic of a horrible filthy polypterus eating a cute little defenseless discus.

What gives value to me is the amount of likes vs message ratio.

Now the topic of value seems to be popping into my life more and more these days, maybe it is just the current buzz word or maybe it is the ultimate catch-all when one has no real metric to measure success against. So I will play with.

I evaluate the value based on the content per thread and what it adds to the overall story that that thread is telling. The trinkets and social acknowledgment that drives many an online interaction these days is for me such a detractor that I almost go out of my way to not pay it any attention. (Sometimes even scrubbing the screen to remove it from displaying and influencing what I am actually reading.)

So for me at the moment upload_2017-10-26_2-26-46.png is the ideal profile display well actually upload_2017-10-26_2-28-25.png

    Needed to fix that ;-)

as for the trinkets in this thread ... I am just pleased it is easy to remove them from the profile. What will be cool is an AI evaluated title that indicates the current "value" a poster is adding ... we all have off days / weeks / years and seeing that in the context of an current left field post could really influence other's responses.

Hmmm thanks Christiaan .. your post made me re-evaluate how / what I wanted to see in a thread on TASA.

I have decided for this morning the info carried on the avatar might be worth more than the location so I stripped all the trinkets and social distractions - it really should not matter to me if you are a mod, admin, or just a common goldfish.

    upload_2017-10-26_3-9-46.png

I use uBlock Original for cleaner browsing ... here is my TASA custom filters. (It also removes headers and footers as a bonus)

    Code:
    www.tropicalaquarium.co.za##.userTitle
    www.tropicalaquarium.co.za##.wrapped.bannerLightGreen.userBanner
    www.tropicalaquarium.co.za##.extraUserInfo
    www.tropicalaquarium.co.za##.ugc.messageText.signature.baseHtml
    www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/banners/*.*$image
    www.tropicalaquarium.co.za##.breadBoxBottom
    www.tropicalaquarium.co.za##.sharePage
    www.tropicalaquarium.co.za###logoBlock
    www.tropicalaquarium.co.za###headerProxy
    www.tropicalaquarium.co.za##.breadBoxTop > nav
    www.tropicalaquarium.co.za##footer
    www.tropicalaquarium.co.za##.wrapped.bannerSecondary.userBanner
I do like the info available to me, but that one can get by just clicking on the users name ...
    upload_2017-10-26_3-18-52.png
So no need to have it in my face all the time.

Tnx for you're calculated, wise words Ferdi. To be honest too much for me so early in the morning but it makes sense lol.I feel the same as many other members, admin ect regarding posting nonsense...I guess what I ment with value of likes....You can get likes for "free" but in general when you post something of note, helpful, knowledgeable you will probably get a like which should not come free but worked (earned) for wich is appreciated and makes you feel you contributed for the good.So at the end of the day it's not about not posting and keeping quite or just posting to get you're counter going. Its about carefully selecting what to say and when,so you're post has value.

100% now in years gone by, one could dislike a post - and this cause a truck load of issues and tiffs between members - mostly because they lack the emotional intelligence to deal with online rejection ( my view). So as an example ... if I looked at Hendre's post about one fish eating another fish - an immediate reaction might be down vote him - but that simple click has no context after the fact. Was he down voted because of bad picture quality - maybe both in topic and focus, was it because of the non relevance to the original OP's topic, was it because I just do not like post people posting for the need to post things or was it because I just lost my R1200 discus and it is just raw at the moment. Without context it could be any right, but all that Hendre would see is that I down voted him and he would then use the indicator to revenge down vote me on this post and so the cycle continues - I think this was the main reason what down voting is not on TASA. Same logic for the likes ....

Now I am a proponent of measured perceived value ... if say more than 4 people liked my post and say 75% of them are not the same people that always like my posts and they have not liked more than 4 other posts in the last 18 hours then surely the measured perceived value of that post should be higher than a post that falls outside of those basic parameters. Only problem with this - you need participation ..

@Zebra Pleco - not sure if anybody said thanks ... even if I do not need this trinket in my life, it is good to see TASA admins willing to try new stuff and be more engaging with its members.

Not sure if people realize - esp those who actively engaged in building the list that it will not show on your profile if you override the setting ....

Changed mine now, I'm a gourami haha, this is cool. @f-fish excellent post, I also wouldn't like a hate button. It's unnecessary in a hobby that should be fun and where we are working with cute animals. As for posting stuff to have a little go at someone like what hendre posted is also fine, mates always have a poke at each other and besides if someone wants to put that horrible monster with his discus there will be consequences as fish eat fish.

We must all try and be more lighthearted because everyday life can be very stressful on us. TASA is one of my escapes from this, updating my thread, asking for help, giving help and meeting new people. It takes my mind off of everything else for a while. I hope people don't see me as a shitposter. I do chat but try to keep it within context most of the time and to maybe have a laugh at their or my expense, in a friendly way.

I notice that there is "progress to next level" indicator in the top right corner.
That, more than the fish type you are, may lead some people to start chasing posts.
    Other than that, good job.
