I agree with this statement, as at the end of the day, it is all that matters to non specialized fish. I like however to know these things, as it explains what is happening and you then know what to expect if something changes.

You did not say whether you are aerating or not?

No I do not aerate. This method of letting the water age for 24-48hrs has worked for me and I havent had a fish death in months

In my opinion, if its working for you and your fish then there's no need to fix something that's not broken.

Agreed. I am not trying to change your ways, I am trying to figure out for myself what is happening. Theory says aerating the water increase the pH, because it assist in CO2 escaping the water and lower CO2 levels increase pH levels. Therefore I suspected that you do not aerate, as that would have meant theory is wrong. Your pH is dropping however, so that implies you are not aerating and your tap water has low kH. Otherwise it would not be possible.

I further suspect that you have a constant battle to keep your pH from falling in your tank? (Maybe not battle, but to keep an eye on it)

You are spot on about this. I have to watch that I do not overfeed and do regular maintenance and I mean regular. I have two 3ft tanks with internal filters and a 4ft with a 2ft sump. I do about 30-40% water change on each of these tanks per week. I sometimes will delay water changes on one of the 3ft's as is has many plants to keep nitrates at bay.

Also I added two or three coral chips to the tanks to help as a pH buffer.

I change 100l from my 220l tank every week all I do is syphon out the water with the hose add enough dechlor for the entire water volume then replace my water straight from the hose. I am lucky in that my tap has hot and cold water so I can balance the temp before adding. In about 8 months I have lost 4 neons so I think its safe to assume no adverse effects hhave occured. I think people over inflate the danger of tap water. Having said that I would NOT do this for sensitive species like discus

What doing i before water change!

Add tap water in drums, add heater the same temp me tank, add internal filter with carbon for 24-28hour
Next days throw water into tank.
Clown loach, bala shark and black ghosk knife do fine.

Maybe later buy RO but need know more that one

What exactly is that? I am also finding that my pH is dropping and want to combat that without raising my TDS, but also limiting WC to fortnightly.

Guys, can we keep this on Topic... Laures question was about adding Dechlor when filling from a hose pipe, not from buckets or tubs.....

I sincerely hope you are not using only RO water... then you heading for a pH crash.

Depends on your water. I often do 50% W/C. BUT when I fill up, I fill VERY slowly. Put the tap on and let if fill over a period of 3 hours. This way temp fluctuations are gradual.

Not lower pH is CT Tom, Lower kH. Thus the pH has a tendency to drop. Water out a tap us usually higher in pH than aged, and will usually drop a little. Nothing strange about that. But because the kH in CT is so low, the drop would be more drastic.

Now gentleman... now that we have completely bastardized this thread, can we please get back on topic. (The difference in pH kH etc coming out the tap may have significant influence on how you fill your tank (be it aged water or from the hose). Laure is wanting information on using the tap method and people's experience!!!!

@Laure... I know the guys seem to have become stuck on this off-topic side topic, but I do feel it is a little relevant to your decision on how you fill the tank.

    @Zoom & @Big G apologies for going a bit off-topic.

I have never filled any of my tanks from a hose pipe and then Dechlor in the tank, so I wont be able to comment. I used to use the Dechlor in the bucket/ tub method.

    Guys and girls and mods

I don't want to start a fire here, but if you read the first post it describes exactly what I want to know. I want to hear about your experience with dechlorinator when filling straight from the tap, and what method you follow regarding that. No buckets, aging, ph crashes, etc. I have been doing the water aging method for years now and I have that under control. :)

I admit I should have made the thread title more descriptive. Perhaps the mods can assist me to change it slightly?

Ok, I'm going to change your title so that people may read the rest of the thread before replying!

    Hope that solves it?

    Cheers

I actually bought pipes and fittings to make a water changer to do in-tank water changes. Never made it since we have a hosepipe ban here in P.E. Wish the damn water restrictions would lift already. So while I have never done it I am sure its a viable method of doing water changes (at least to some degree).

Thanks Big G I was beginning to think that either I am unclear when I write something or most people on here can't read properly.

Eugene (@jedigenie) I know we have a hosepipe ban due to water restrictions, but if you fill 100L with a bucket or 100L with a hosepipe how does that impact the water restrictions? Hose pipe bans are stupid as far as I am concerned.

Ok, so Laure, to sum up peoples views so far, and to cut through all this confusion, it would seem that upto 25% can be done with little problem, and that the Dechlor should be added either as you are doing the top up, or immediately before/after top up.

The quantity would appear to still be up for debate, but slightly more than quantity replaced seems to be a good starting point?

    Any further comments?

Please remember to keep them only relating to the threads title?

    Regards
    G!
