The river tank

So not much happening yet, I should be able to get my hillstream loaches next week, along with some gobies...holding thumbs
Been looking at gobies on the interwebb lately and found this thread on loaches online forum, Its a looong thread but this guy has some amazing fish

So I haven't been able to get the gobies but got me some hillstream loaches on Saturday
4 of these beauties (Homaloptera conffuzona)

And 2 swellia

They are awesome, I like the unusual fishes, I see that I need to move the pump that provides the flow as it blows along the back of the tank so now they all hang out right there at the back hidden behind some of the bigger rocks so I dont see them...sitting there looking at the tank yesterday thinking I have another HUGE problem with this aquarium, so big...gonna need a lot more fish

 

In the pic you cant tell, but the front fins are huge...they are really much prettier in person

So an update, pretty bumbed actually...as soon as the load shedding started I lost 3 of the 4 Homaloptera and the next day the last one they really loved the flow from the pumps, so much that I added a second pump and they were playing in the flow constantly, It seems that they are really dependant on that flow / oxygenation. Then one of the 3 spotted hillies just disappeared, I think...., I've been thinking I may just forget about the idea of hillstream species as the stock is limited, often expensive and they sometimes just don't survive I don't enjoy spending R250 on a fish and then it dies after 2 weeks not just the money of course, just sad, anyway I started to do a re-scape as I found an awesome piece of wood and I thaught I might just fill the river tank with cory's, BNP etc...
But then my "dealer" LFS owner (I think he is like a drug dealer, he knows what I want and that I would do anything to get it) called and said he has some gobies for me.....

Sorry to hear that, but hillstream species will struggle in this Eskom environment. If the oxygen level drops, they have little capacity to make do with the conditions. My only suggestion is to get a UPS/inverter system to kick in when the power goes out, to hook up a bunch of blowers to it. Should keep things going for 2 to 4 hours. Perhaps lobbing in an ice bottle - cooler water holds more oxygen than warmer water, plus hillstream species will appreciate the temperature drop-off.

Stiphodon gobies are also often associated with high-flow environments, so I'd keep the same cautions in mind when dealing with those. Stunning animals, though, and I'd be jealous if you go a few.

 

Yes, I have an inverter on my air pump, seems that it was just not enough for those little guys.
