The other half...

Well, reading all these posts makes me glad I'm not in that position anymore. Snyper/Stephen would bore me like you can't believe. I can understand why couples fight about it. I know it's horrible but true. I thought he was just going through a phase when he started keeping fish (all my friends were getting bunnies - it's an Onderstepoort thing - and it made him think of when he kept fish as a kid and so he dusted off the old tank).
So it is kinda my fault for reminding him. I'd only let Stephen speak about his fish for one minute a day. When I saw the phase was sticking, I started thinking. But i must admit, it's easier to sway someone if they have a thing for animals and living things (I'm a vet student).
I also agree with Stephen when he says it's easier if it's a low maintenence fish, like a Betta! Plus, I must give Stephen alot of credit because he gave me all my equipment, except for a heater (lighting, filter, tank, pump).

 

My future wife actually bought me my first tank after 20odd years with fish only in the fridge till than. She wouldn't keep them her self but asks now and than if we can't get a new fish (mainly oddballs)

I think i am really lucky not only did i get my wife into the hobby but she cleans my tanks for me aswell because apparently i don't do a good enough job . who am i to complain .

 

I tried getting my GF to join the forum so that she can learn more, but she says she would not know what to ask and that she's to shy.

 

Other 1/4 looks after the evicted gold fish in the pond outside ... feeds and talks to them everyday. I get, wanting to share your hobby with that other person, how it makes life easier when you spend a buck or two on something over the weekend or you driver 4 hours every weekend to do some LFS hopping with her tagging along. It all makes sense to easy the conversations.

What I do not get is the number of couples that are on the forum .. I mean that is like going away on a holiday together .. how is that a holiday if you spend it with the same person that you spend the rest of the year with? For me the forum is like a short break .. no way should the other 1/4 get involved in this activity.

 

i wish my boyfriend would show a little more interest in my fish, he thinks they not really pets. this from a guy with a 1.2m boa i mean i look at the boa, i wont touch him but i admire him. *shudders* his names Angus lol and i keep thinking how cool it would be to put live plants in his tank, its big enough lol like a planted fish tank. i think it would look pretty cool with like some ficus spp and ferns add a few nice rocks and big wood pieces. but then you gota take it all out when you feed him.

 

I get what you're saying f-fish but Stephen and I share very few interests and fish-keeping is one of them. It's something we do together because if he were to try talk to me about his work (accounting), I would have absolutely NO idea what he was saying.

@windfire, how can snakes have personality when compared to fish. No contest!

 

i know!! specially the bettas they got tonnes of personality. he's also got a ball python called Mc Feegle, he's very pretty but in general im not fond of snakes. to be fair he is offering to help me make a hood for the new tank because i might have to use a table saw and he doesnt want me to use it cos its dangerous hehe very good move on his part as im accident prone lol.

 

@windfire: Score! Many hands make light work... I'm also accident prone. I got a massive blister from glue gun when I was making my corries' cave and when I chewed the glue off my finger I took the blister skin off. Very painful.

 

ooo ow, horrible when you got to put it in warm water for the first time. im covered in shallow cuts from the glass plate that i glued the rocks too, they didnt sand the edges off and well the rest is history lol.

i'll glue it together if he would just cut it for me, he's a sign writer and works with it often and he says it could bounce against the saw or something and then theres trouble. who am i to argue lol im going to ask really nicely if he can find me some off cuts at work that i could use.

 

Free offcuts... Lucky fish! I love getting free stuff. Snyper is always giving me stuff for my tank. He even made my filter for me.
