Its only an idea, doesn't mean this will happen.

You do however make a point. this will then only draw in members for our
prizes. Our prizes stop and they may leave. Also it mustn't feel like a bribe to them lol:p "Join NOW!!!! You could win...."

I second this idea and that way you can have a number of 'awards' eg. Most referred members, best advice for the month, most helpful, etc etc etc. You could even get creative to make it a little more fun with fun awards being handed out. Not much time is needed to do this either. Nice suggestion snyper!

Perfect thats what i was refering to. This is really the best idea. It makes you feel part of the forum as opposed to some plants - no offense

Wont work IMO. There only are a few members that will easily have a shot at this. We know who they are

There has to be something that ALL can have a chance in.

    EDIT:

    The friend refferals will work!

    Cool idea Snyper ^^,

Something we have on the ps3 forum is each year the members host a forum awards. We make polls for random things, like clown of the year, best new member since XX, most helpful member, fail post of the year and so on. Then all the members nominate who they think should win, and the community votes for a winner.

Admin then changes their special titles to reflect the award they've one.

Sure the 'best advice for the month' may be a little biased towards the more knowledgable members but that is why there can be a few different awards which would then give everyone a chance. You can have a 'most improved in fishkeeping' award, a 'most active user' award, a 'best sense of humour' award, etc etc. The list is endless and can be adjusted accordingly.

You could even set it that the same person cannot win the same award in consecutive months or something which will give more people a chance at each award.

my opinion on a comp judged by the members is it is not going to be fair, If you don't like someone then you wont vote for them even if they have the best tanks or what ever I saw this on another forum as well the people that had Discus always won the comp.
but veegal has a good idea with a bunch of different categories.

We've had endless discussions in the past about giving physical prizes as presents... but the logistics has never worked. We've had sponsors offer prizes... but you know what... this is a free site for all... let's keep it that way.

And drawing new members just because we have a competition is a false way of bringing people to the forum. They'll come for a short while, and then bugger off. Fish keeping is more than a hobby... it's a passion. you either like it, or not. I think drawing people who don't really like it, but keep the fish because it makes a nice ornament in their lounge is the wrong type of person we want. We want lively, enthusiastic people. people who go out there way to find articles to share. people who give away their fry. people who give away their plant clipping. People who WANT to come and talk on a forum and get to know other fellow enthusiasts. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of new members... I just don't want to loose the close knit family we have become. Yes we can be big and still all know each other... but we all need to share the same passion

It's all about your reasonings and what you what Oscar. If you just joined TASA in the hopes that you will get some fish prize, you will very soon loose interest. This isn't what we wanting here.

Oscar freak would you join a bodybuilding forum just to win a prize such as a tank top?

What colour tank top? Lol just kidding.

Thats mainly why people join competitions, to win something. But people join forums to learn, share interests (in the topic), give advice and have fun

I'm a member of quite a few forums - and the whole reason why I joined each one of them is because they had something to offer. And by that, I mean they had experience and knowledge to offer, and had a good reputation for their general knowledge base and helpful members.

That's all TASA should offer. It's not like we have to compensate for our lack of experience to share; we have plenty to offer. And that's the most worthwhile thing that you can walk away with - knowledge.

I think the fishdata base is a step in the right direction. Rory and i started it way back but i kinda went off track and got to busy. If you guys go look at www.cichlid-forum.com you will see a very well balanced site with calculators, fish data bases etc. that is the way TASA should go.
