    When you do scratch it let me know, might be enough time to convince my SO we need another tank.....

    Yeah, was a shame. Came home from a 3 day business trip away to the pair dead, in a very murky tank.
    Didn't have the energy to buy another bunch of youngsters again in the hope that I would get a pair out of them.

    @HEIHACHI - Did you want to purchase fry WHEN I breed them? Heheheh. Might take a while for me to get a group for myself to be honest. I don't have nearly as many tanks as I want (/need?)

    Thanks @<<Nemo>> - Give us a shout if you want info on putting a tank together, getting the right mix of species can be tricky but once you've got it right a Tanganyika tank is very rewarding!
    @Reedfish - Eish man! It can be hard to get your yourself going again after such losses. Helps to have a lot more fish to look after and keep you smiling. It's the harsh reality of fish-keeping though. Somes losses are unpreventable, mostly brought on by poor manufacturing of animal life-support systems, and Eskom if you're in South Africa I guess. In no world should Calvus perish from three days or even three weeks of not being fed. Hahaha, come on man, it's only a two-three year wait that can be undone in an hour again! Hehehehe! That's fish for you. Hate to love 'em, but fact in you'd probably have a pair by if you started again the next week.

    Hhehehe! In the same boat, in fact I suspect that is most of the reason why I don't already breed them!

    Hehehehe! @HEIHACHI - they're not actually too bad when you think about it long enough.

    The price of the fish themselves can look high but when you consider they require no specialised filtration nor lighting and substrate and decor can be found on the beach, second hand tanks also come mightly cheaply these days, then you might start thinking you can get away spending less cash on a Tagnanyika set-up than some 45 litre chemical puddles people keep for their kids, sort of thing....

    We all have to stem our desires when it comes to livestock selection unfortunately. Fish like the Benthochromis tricoti grow huge and need a massive amount of space and dedication to get them into top condition. It's simply not a fish for your average fish-keeper. Obvious somehwere down the line it still comes a matter of what you can afford and what you simply can't but with a bit of a budget you can certaininly put something together, and building a community slowly is usually the best way to do it.

    One thing which surprises people about these cichlids is that they can live for 6-15 years on average, this is far longer than most tropical fish and you simply get more time out of them.
    Frontosa live a heck of a lot longer, twice to three times as long as most dogs, so one should consider that R300 per fish is actually very cheap and you could buy a group of 10 for around the same value as most pure-bred dogs.

    @Jack Stone,

    Yup, Tangs are quite expensive.
    But they are really nice, and relatively long lived. So well worth it imo.

    Completely agree with your points on this, definitely on the cards for me. Once I have finalised on my side will definitely be bugging you for direction, when you have a chance go through my posts and you will find a thread on a 3 tier stand that I have been busy with, do you think it can work as a tang setup?

    @HEIHACHI - have you got a link to the thread by chance?
    Looked through part of the one thread, couldn't find a 3 tier stand but I did see that you are definitely short a few aquariums! Hheheheh!

    Tanganyika cichlids are so varied in their sizes and behaviours that you can use anything from a 45 litre tank to an olympics sized swimming pool... but no bigger than that, that would just be ridiculous....
    So it's just a matter of picking the right species for your tank sizes.
