    Been seeing some potential spawning behaviour from my checkerboard cichlid pair the last few days.
    Male darting around and clearly showing a keen interest in the female. Today, some eggs :)

    They're not in a dedicated breeding setup so can't really do much apart from perhaps add fry food, should I see survivors.
    Tank also has chilli rasbora and a couple otocinclus.

    Still, cool to see, and perhaps sometime I can try breeding them properly. Really great little dwarf cichlids in general.

    @Cale24

    Even for small cichlids, Checkers will be protective parents.
    Hopefully some of the fry will survive

    Nice to hear, would be great to have a few survivors. As I understand it, caring for fry is left entirely to the females.
    I'm not even too sure what parameters breeding requires, but my pH is pretty low and I keep the TDS in the tank in question at 120ppm.

    Did a larger than normal water change a couple days ago which I suppose triggered spawning.

    The emergency exit didn't open, nor did I find a parachute under my seat

    This afternoon when I came home after work, I opened the curtains in my living room. The curtain rail came out of the wall and landed on the edge of my 30 L QT, shattering the front and side glass. It was housing 4 Rosy tetras and 6 Sparkling Gouramis. I've had them for 2 weeks. It emptied in seconds. But luckily left about 3 cm of water that slowly drained. I managed to catch about 5 liters of water in my bucket then rushed to catch the fish. Got them all, except one gourami. Found it flopping around on the carpet. Then I smelled plastic burning. The heater had melted its plastic housing.

    I got the fish into the bucket, threw most of the plants in there with the filter and heater. Put some towels down and left to get a new tank.20210812_144441.jpg

    I got a bigger 40 Liter and filled it as soon as I got home. Had to boil a kettle or 2 to get the temp into the 20s. Then I got driftwood from the deceased tank in there, plants, heater and filters. I added Prime and once on temp I added Stability. During all this I was drip acclimating the fish and once the tank reached the same temp, I added them...

    So far so good. No loss of life except my humor. I may have told the rental agent, where the curtain rail can go next...

    Not my ideal afternoon, but as bad luck goes, this one could've been worse. This is why I dont have a 2 meter... Now wheres that beer!

    @Hendrik Bergh

    Sounds like a total nightmare. But at least you got it sorted.

    A few years ago, I found 3/4 of the water of my big tank on the lounge floor one morning. Filter connection had come loose. Not fun!

    @Hendrik Bergh please be careful with the heater and monitor to see if it does not stuck to one temperature or do not go on. Especially after it melt the plastic covers.

    Glad to see you had no loses. It happens in the hobby and usually on the sh..tist days

    Thanks @Innocent159. That heater has made it's way to the trash can. I dont trust it and it was given to me by a friend who immigrated. No financial loss. Luckily I had another lying around. Dont know if anyone else does this but I always have a spare heater. Just in case...

    Thanks @A new day. I was lucky that I had my buckets and nets at hand. Its kept under the tank in its "stand" (more of a wooden box).

    Not the ideal way of getting a bigger tank but highly effective...

    Ohh what a rough afternoon. Glad you sorted. Why only a 40L though should have gone to 100 liters. My 2m is under the curtain rails. So thanks for giving me something more to think about. Better move it forward.
