The company has changed - they are all about money now, people are treated badly, we are constantly being told about job losses and honestly most of the people who still work here have had enough, are demotivated and really dont care. I have decided to stick it out for a while still while looking for another job but as soon as I can afford to take another massive salary cut (about 40 % of what I currently earn) I am going to apply to be a chemist again rather than a manager. Well unless the company really does close its doors or drastically improves the way it treats it staff.

Unfortunately from what I hear from friends and my sons and my experience so, so many companies have become like that
It's all about their profits and nothing else
The staff are numbers... slave it away and dont complain because it doesnt help
However, i could not resign without another job in the present conditions ..... not that brave!

Orchids are quite tough plants, irrespective to the idea that they are finicky and high demand plants.
They are also one of the genus with the most species in it. If I remember correctly there are over 6000 species of orchid, excluding possible hybrids.

I started out with 3 x phalaenopsis orchids, and have in the interim gotten a few more.

Nice orchids. There is an orchid show in Stellenbosch this weekend, probably going to hunt for another nice sp.

They're looking great! My mom seems to have magic fingers when it comes to orchids - she's got about 4 or 5 different species that all thrive. I tried a Phalaenopsis and it didn't do well at all, i think because of overwatering.

Phalaenopsis are tough orchids. You can buy them in the supermarket here, and they are really cheap.
They are mass produced on the Continent

I managed to keep one going for about a year, then left it in mother dearest’s care for a week... to be honest I knew what would happen but I did end up with a very nice pot when I got home

Water weekly, give them some nice indirect light, fertilise lightly every 2-3 weeks

In addition to what the others have said, never let the roots sit in water. And water the roots, not the crown of the plant. Tank water seemed to work wonders - got most of my supermarket gift Phaleonopsis to bloom again. The one mounted was, as said, seriously neglegted and years old but it has survival instinct :)

Also, don’t cut off the spent flower stalks as you might get a secondary node. Only cut it off when it is really shriveled up and dry.
