I wasn’t sure where to post this but here goes:

If I have a weaker light, do I account for that by having a longer photo period? All low tech plants (Anubias, java fern, java moss etc).

Secondly, I’m considering swapping all the fish in my 2 tanks. What would the best way to do this? I was thinking of getting two buckets and doing some form of drip acclimation.

If you’re talking about the little LED strip you got from me, you can up the duration to 12h and it will still grow no algae. I’d upgrade that light in due time though, it’s really very weak.

Are the parameters in your 2 tanks quite different? PH, temp, nitrates? If so, the more sensitive fish would need some acclimation. The white clouds won’t care.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah that LED light is on my 106l tank and surprisingly, some of the plants are growing with no ferts (albeit quite slowly). I have plans to upgrade the light once lockdown is over.

    Parameters should be quite similar.

My synodontis beat my young bichir pretty badly two nights ago, despite my best efforts the poly passed away a few hours ago. To say I'm gutted is an understatement :(
He was the fish @A new day got for me in November. I have very bad luck at the moment...

Aaah my sympathies @Hendre :( that’s rough for you...

PS and not really relevant I suppose, but it wasn’t a gift, it was a fair exchange for the plant boxes (which I love). So no need to feel bad for me somehow. I feel bad for you, I know you loved that fish and went the extra mile for it. Chin up!

    @,Reedfish

Just to add to what @A new day said about proteas
Never clean around the root area with a fork, the minute you do that and touch the roots you kill the plant
I would think they would do well in the UK as it's one of the plants that.emigrants have taken to Portugal and they thrive there out in the gardens
Maybe try planting one in plain old garden soil without adding anything but make sure pot has good drainage

I can imagine that proteas would do well in Portugal.
In a previous garden in CT I planted a couple of pincushions. The ones in a very exposed spot (windy, baking sun, poor soil) thrived while the ones in a more protected spot struggled.

    Thanks Maria.

Redid a 60cm tank with a laminar flow system (3D printers are really helpful). Will post some photos tomorrow

Funny enough I haven't been very lucky with the pincushions yet my proteas are doing so well
My soil has lots clay and stones/rocks
Want to try get 2 or 3 more this year if I can find some

    They were in pots.
    Peat and river sand mix.

I had a go, it didn’t really work out, so that’s me done with them.
I have just reported loads of ferns. And the Cyatheas (tree ferns) have gone into quite big pots, so I don’t have a lot of space anyway.

The cover came off the pump and killed one of my female catfish, I was shuffling the plugs and didn't notice. Very upset over that mistake
