    Hi JP01,

I think they look like striped angels on a base of flourite?

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

A bed of Aquasoil, not flourite.

Still, nice looking angels. Prof, I think you should do another altum import and try breeding them again! I'd definitely set up a big tank for altums!

    You see Sean,

I knew I could tease you into a reply on that substrate....!

Altums are not to be taking up lightly, but I am looking at importing some in future again. As for breeding them, that is certainly one of my goals and this is also why I visited Simon Forkel in Germany. He has now actually bred those Rio Atabapos if you go and look at his website, those are absolutely stunning, stunning fishes!!!!!

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Hi Double-D,

You know that I am a fan of wild type anything including angels, but these blues are interesting in that they are close to wilds, if I look at their markings. The one pic is of a male the other of a female. Have they spawned and are they a pair? What do you know about where these fishes come from. The female lacks that vertical stripe and if you get offspring from these you will have to select for fishes that have the stripe because this problem is strongly inherited, and I feel angels should have all their stripes.

Tell us a little more about them if you can.

Jenn, your angels are very pretty, I think those Peruvians with their dots look very nice. What I would like to WARN folks about though is that I am now seeing more and more angels on wholesaler lists which they call Pterophyllum altum - Peruvian Altums. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE THESE ALTUMS, they are perfectly normal Pterophyllum scalare angels from Peru, nice, but definitely not altums, don't get conned into this.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

@Dirk Bellstedt I got them from @Vis and that is as much as I know. Maybe he can shed some light on the history. With regards to breeding them I have not tried yet due to my hectic schedule at work. And when I do I would like to isolate them from the rest of the community and tankspace is another issue at this stage. The female actually have a broken vertical stripe that doesn't extend as far down as the male's. In that photo it didn't show. My male manages to hide all hes stripes at times.

These were bought as a group of 8 juveniles at my my local LPS. They were about 4-5cm high and looked exactly the same. Only a few months later I noticed the two developing the blue, the other remained the normal wild type coloring.

Here are some pics of the same angels long before Double D took them over in my display tank.

So these could in fact be F1 or F2 strains of the cross then?

    Hi Double_D,

I do not want to dissappoint you but one would have no reason to think that these originate from some or other cross, I think you are referring to crosses with wild fishes? They certainly would not come from my fishes.

I have seen these "blue angels" in discussions on the internet by a guy in the Phillipines, Ken Kennedy, and he has selected such blue fishes from a mutation that he found perhaps amongst his own fishes or amongst fishes he bought, I would not know (Google for blue angelfishes freshwater). Maybe your fishes are offspring of those fishes?

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

@Dirk Bellstedt I was thinking about a cross breed with a wild type since you said that there are a lot of similarity with the wild type. Might be that the strain was at some stage before import exposed to a wild type or by someone locally even? This is all a learning curve for me since this is only the second time in my life I keep angels.

    No Double-D,

There is no reason from the genetics point of view to think that these fishes have been crossed with wild type to achieve this blue colour or to have those wild type stripes. There are many domestic angels that still have those stripes, just like wild ones do. These "blue gene" angels must have been exported from Phillipines to Malaysia or Singapore and then multiplied there and then exported to SA. From the pics that Gerhard has shown one can see that these fishes did not have nice fin extensions when they were smaller which is the result of raising the fishes under too dense conditions or not treating them properly during transport. However, now that the fishes are adult they look better, but you are going to have to get that female to breed soon or else she is not going to breed any more, she is getting old. If you raise the youngsters carefully and feed them well, then they should development their fin extensions properly and then you should have nice angels.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

@Dirk Bellstedt I am digging for a 4ft tank that I can dedicate to them. As soon as I have the setup I will get in contact with you about the breeding and conditioning. I want to do this right from the get go so I'm going to need a lot of schooling on this subject. If you won't mind helping.

    Double-D,

A cube with dimensions of 60 cm long x 50 cm wide x 50 cm is actually much better, so no need for a 1.2 m tank (What has happened to the metric system on this forum, are we going back to British colonial times, next thing we are going to talk about water depth in fathoms, weight in stones, da da da...).

I will help with the greatest of pleasure to get them into breeding condition, no problem.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
