    Oops

Thank you, day get food on a daily basis and hunt guppy fry almost on a weekly basis.
I thought that hungry fish is always a healthy fish.

Will give them a bit more food.

    Hi there...
Great thread.. Prof, I have used fish food that I got from you in the past, must say my fish were very happy and healthy with all the food.
Who is breeding Altum Angels at the moment? :)
    Thank you

    Hi MornéZ,

Thanks for the compliment re the food, my next shipment will reach SA shortly.

Nobody is or has ever bred altum angels in South Africa, but Simon Forkel is breeding them in Germany. I am on contact with him....

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

But that's been posted in April 2011. I guess the eggs shown there are almost as big as my angels are now right?

If you would perhaps touch up your German or use your mouse to scroll down to the bottom of the page you would see:

    Akualisiert (Freitag 17.Februar 2012 11:30)

which means that it was updated on 17 Februar 2012, so no need for your comments, I do know how to read a webpage date in German and Simon Forkel emailed me to tell me about this. Enjoy the pictures and the videos.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

I just saw the date at the top of the post. And it looked like a single post Sorry about that. I translated the page and I now see it says LAST UPDATED at the bottom. Anyways. Hows yours doing or am I crazy now too? You do still have them right?

My last altums died about two years ago, so no I do not have any at the moment, but I am hoping that I may be able to get some again in the not too distant future.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Hi Gerrit,

Yes, I do still have some of the angels, send me a PM if you want some and we may be able to organize something.

    Morne,

I am in regular contact with Simon and he has indicated to me that he cannot even supply the German demand and does not even need to consider any exports at this stage. Besides that his fishes are expensive, which one can understand there is a high demand and a small supply. However, I may actually combine a scientific visit to Europe with a visit to him and then bring fishes back with me. Not in my luggage, that is not permitted, but as shipped fishes which I would actually ship on the same flight on which I may be coming back to SA, but again this is expensive, so all of this is not so easy.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

WOW prof. R10 for a wild peruvian angel x commen striped ! Talk about a bargain.
Man I wish my grandparents still lived in Strand (used to visit them almost every year), would have loved to try a pair.

Prof. did you use the same parameters to try and breed the altums as u did for the wild peru x commen stripe or just try to copy Simon Forkel's water.
Did they ever show any sign's of pairing of?

Here is a link that shows that angels actually are larger in size (more scales and fin rays) the closer you get to the Orinoco basin.
There's also a link to the expidition of Dr.Herbert.R.Axelrod in 1974 to the Rio Negro.

Looking forward to seeing pictures of your Altum angel fry (eventually it will happen ).

Some of my stem plants leaves were half eaten, I thought it was the pleco. My mom later told me she saw the angels eating the leaves, which I couldn't believe.
Then some day later I actually saw them eating the leaves, not just pecking and spitting out.

Just a few comments Good Times,

If you look at the administrators of the finarama forum, you will see me there , so I know about all of these things. If you would search on that forum for Santa Isobelle angels then you will find some long threads where the paradox fishes are discussed at length and in which I have contributed with numerous posts.

My angels breed in my tap water without any manipulation to the water. I am not sure if the altums would do this, mine never paired off, but I now know why and that is that they needed tanks that were 60 cm or deeper, my tanks were 50 cm deep and then this does not work.

If you do not feed your angels adequately they will start nipping plants, but as a rule their diet is carnivorous and plant damage from angels in not a factor. I keep about 20 adult angels in a large plant display tank and I never have any plant damage.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

I can see why few people try to keep altums..... with the high mortality rate I read about when they travel, the price of the fish and as per above quote, the price of the tank (60cm deep tank will probably need 10mm glass...... NOT CHEAP!), it seem like an extremely high risk high expenditure outing......

Thanx Prof, wow you really are everywhere.

I skipped a feeding the previous day, still thought that regardless of hunger they wouldn't even try plants.

So when is the tank upgrade and new shipment of Altum's coming? :D

    Hi Prof,

How would a person set about getting some of your sprecialy bred Angels? I have read so much about them, and some people that have experience with your lines have only the highest regard for your work.

Hi Morné and others that have asked about my angels,

I am very busy this week work wise, but also I will be getting a big food order in on Friday from Germany, and Altum's shipments arrive tomorrow and I need to get my fishes there as well. As a result I will not be able to attend to any fish shipments for the next week, but then I will inform all that have asked me from Johannesburg how we can perhaps get a shipment to you. Please just be patient.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
