They actually do not do well in planted aquaria because you cannot manage the waste properly, they do much better in a deep (70 cm) tank with bottom substrate but with only a few plants and logs. But there are some people that are successful. Have a look below and do some drooling.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Those are fishes in some of Simon Forkel's tanks in Germany. I visited him in June this year. Those are a breeding pair which we would not even dream of selling. He sells youngsters of 15 cm tall at 29 Euro (x R12 approx).

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Hi Schalk,

Thanks for the compliment, I hope that will give you a lot of pleasure.

I have many more of these that can go and at R10 per fish they must be a bargain. Why I am offering them at this price is because I would like these genes to get into the SA hobby.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Re they wild breeds or crossed (wild + domestic)?

How big are the ones going for R10? Do you sell adults too?

    Hi Danelle,

I have posted the whole history of these in this thread before, but the grandparents of these fishes were a female wild Peruvian P scalare angel and the male was my wild type strain of which you also have two offspring. The ones that are going for R10 are as shown on the thread one page back. I do not sell the adults as these are 5 years old and are my favourites at the moment. If you look back in the thread you will also see pics that I have posted of the parents as well.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Hi all you forum and internet dwellers. Have any of you ever seen a pure white angel with black stripes?
Might have found me a new project.

Only seen the sliver with stripes - But the white with black stripes would be a stunner. I'd love to have some.

Maybe cross a whitey and a natural striped and see what happens?

    Hi Vis,

I am not quite sure if I understand you correctly with regard to the type of angel that you want to breed. White with black stripes, is that not what we have with these angels? Perhaps you can explain.

Danelle, yes those shoals of altums are enough to give you sleepless nights, but you need a LARGE tank to keep them. I will be persuing the possibilities of getting some into SA in the next year...

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Hi Gerhard and Danelle,

With regard to the black and white contrasting angel colouration, if you take the present genetics into consideration, then this is not possible. Angels possess the gene for black and white colouration but the genes controlling this always have the variable colour intensity as part of that gene. By this I mean that they can darken or lighten their colours according to conditions. There is not a way genetically in which you can turn on this black permanently as far as I know. Black colour of fully black angels dominates this striping pattern gene, and is controlled by a different gene. So what you would essentially be looking for is a sudden type of mutation for a switching on the striping pattern permanently. That is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Danelle, the minimum size tank for 6 adult (note I say adult) altums is 1.4 m x 60 cm x 60 cm. I have in the past kept them in 50 cm deep (from top to bottom) water, but I will increase that to 60 cm now having seen the tanks of Simon Forkel, and if I could to 70 cm. This means you are looking at using 12-16 mm thick glass and this is big bucks!

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

No but to have a white angel, with the natural stripes, lightening or darkening. Kind of just the background color?

Anyways. Took some more photos of my Angels.

    Hi Rickus,

Your angels need food bigtime, they are completely thin and emaciated.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
