    Now, now children,

no fights please, both of you are correct, this group of angels did not have discus with them, but they were in my discus system with discus, but I certainly do keep them together. However, I would never buy fishes, whether discus or angels, from the LFS and put them into my discus system, that would be suicide/murder!

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Hi Matt,

I feed them my high quality granulates and flakes, frozen brine shrimps, a small amount of my bloodworm (not the cheap rubbish) and cyclops and Moina.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Ok now the next episode:

Because these fishes are coming on in years and I definitely want to maintain this line, I have allowed them to pair off and then put them into my breeding tanks. I have two pairs that have fry at the moment. The one lot are three weeks old, there are about 150 fry and you can see them with the male, already at three weeks perfect little angels that are 15 mm high. Once they have young these angels are magnificent parents, they come to the glass when I want to feed the babies and then they want to attack me to the point where I regularly get splashed when I put fine granulate on the top of the water surface. Please note that these fry are three weeks old, ok they have been fed with freshly hatched brine shrimps, microworms, fine high quality granulate, and frozen cyclops they are growing at a rate that is far faster than any of my angels before. This male is 22 cm tall and the only criticism that you could perhaps raise at him is that his vertical stripes are interrupted, but I am sure that through selection of fry for full stripes I can correct this. In comparison with the angels in the LFS this lot is in a different league completely. The female does have nice complete vertical stripes. Healthy perfectly shaped fishes, excellent parenting properties!

The second pair (third picture) have a spawn of about 400 fry I guesstimate and these are a week from freeswimming likewise growing like rockets. Parents are also like pirahnas wanting to attack you when they feed.

Obviously with this number of fry I will have some for sale and I hope that this lot can perhaps introduce some better genes into all this rubbish that is all too often sold in the petshops.... more to follow.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Right guys, one step up again, we are now moving into the Mercedes level of Angels (note capital letter), ALTUMS, they make my heart beat faster.

I have kept two batches, the first I bought in 2001 and they lasted until 2007, and the second batch I bought in 2006 and they lasted until earlier this year. I was not able to breed them because they are more difficult than discus, but I am working on this...

I show two pics from the first batch, they eventually grew to about 30 cm tall. Matt and Tracy note with discus and Geophagus.....!

Absolutely magnificent fishes, they took your breath away.

    Enjoy,

    Dirk

Wow that must have been a challenge Prof. HAHA the discus in the back round. Is there any way of you selling me some of that food or importing more for me from Germany. I would be willing to pay the costs?

Send me a PM for a pricelist, have just sent food to Marco again.

    Kind regards,

    @Dirk Bellstedt

Absolutely stunning Prof Dirk. I agree with you that the Altums are just in a different league when talking Angels, they truly are magnificent creatures. I will however attempt to keep some only once you have succeeded in breeding them and I can get some F1's from you. . .

Are you planning on getting another batch for yourself?

    Regards

    Marco

The next batch of Altums I bought in November 2006. On the pics posted below you can see how small they were when I bought them, see the cm scale. The babies were about 1 cm body size. I bought 17 at R170 each, 2 died overnight and three more in the next week and then the next 12 lasted a lot longer. The second and third pics were taken 14 months later, by that time they were 25 cm high..... pity I could not get them to breed, but watch this space....

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
