There were some really good looking offspring but I could not keep them at the time. Would have been Silver body with solid black lines all the way through

    Hi Matt

The first pics are still small, about 2.8cm SL. Their fins were badly damaged at the LPS and still recovering(very fast), but looking way better already. I have only had them for 2 weeks now.

My angels spawn were raised on hatched BBS for 4,5 weeks. I gave them +- 4 feeds a day and more if I could.
After that I moved them to some of Profs number 1 granule and combined it with Tetra mini Granules.
They were in a 100L tank and I did a 20L water change daily or every second day.

They grew very fast. Friends of ours came to visit one weekend and would not believe me when I told them how small they were few days before. Sunday when they left they actually commented on how much they grew only over the weekend :)

The male and female I also got as 4cm angels. The male got to +-18cm tall before I had to sell them.

The angels are fed, bloodworm,Tetra Prima granules,Ocean Nutrifics Special mix(frozen food), Ocean Nutrifics discus flakes and Tetra's Veg Pro.

Hi in my 250L tank when they first bred there were a lot of tetras. The angel pair however kept 45 Tetras sitting in a corner afraid to move an inch :)

I then moved them to the 3ft with no other fish as the angels would most likely have killed the other fish.

    Hi Gerhard,

Your batch of angels that you have at the moment show the typical fin problem seen so often. Those fishes nibbled each other's fins so that they now have that shortened fin look. Those fin extensions never recover properly and that is because they were kept at too high densities when they were small.

The fishes that you show with the spawn are nice, but I wanted to ask, it looks at though the male has some black genes? He looks darker than a normal striped fish. Your babies look excellent and it is clearly visible that they do not have the fin problems that your present ones have.

I want to take some pics later today of some more of my fishes and will post them then.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

I started with 5 and the 2 paired off so I sold the other 3. Believe me 2 angry angels in a 250L take a lot of space :)
If I came within a meter of the tank the male would already start flaring at me. I was feeding once and he actually jumped out the tank to defend the little ones against my hand.

    Hi Prof

Yes the male did have a lot lot of black gene in him. The fry were 25% very dark, not that visible in the pic with the flash. Then there were 50 silver with the normal black stripes angels have and 25% were silver but with that same full black stripes the male had.

The male also had his fins chewed when young but when he was bigger he started growing his fin extensions and I was very worried thinking it was something weird growing from his fins :) The female however never really grew back her extensions.

I wanted to ask this before but it seemed my previous male had some fin problem. At times it would look like the tip of his fins will "melt" almost like finrot but none of the white lining you normally see. If I fed a good amount of food for a few days it will simply go away and the fin looked normal again.
Normally happened if I had to go away for a day or 2.
None of the others ever seemed to be affected by this.

Would like to see more pics :)

One more question: I see some Peruvian Scalares have a lot more brown then others. Does this come with age or are they from a different part of the river system?

    Hi Prof

Quick question on tank bred Altum Angels. How available are they?
Simon Forkel's website seem to be out of date or updated a very long time ago?

Both pics are of the same angel. And as you can see there got some water between my background and glass causing some bubbles, will fix this some time.

    Hi Gerhard,

I think we must be careful to keep this thread on topic, so I do not want to go to too lengthy explanations about why you have your problems.

I have not had this fin melting problem ever, and I have kept a lot of angels in the past, so I cannot comment on this observation.

The Peruvian angels that I was sold were quite varied, so there was a fair amount of brown variation, and there was actually one which had the orange spots that you can see on some websites. I was keen to get this one to reproduce, but this did not happen.

With regard to Simon Forkel, I actually visited him in Germany in June, and I was absolutely blown away, he has the most stunning fishes. I will post some pics in this thread later. At the normal price that he sells them at, it is not viable to import them, to be quite honest, fishes at 15 cm height would land at R600 per fish. You can actually import wildcaughts for a lot less than this, but then you need to import a total of ten boxes of fishes. I know all about this as I am considering this at the moment.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Hi Gerhard,

So here is the next part of the story. In 2007 I then crossed my domestic angels with one of the wild-caught Peruvian angels. Below I show the original pair. The spawn that they produced was not large because quite a few eggs went rotten, but I raised about 50 of them. They grew at record speed into magnificent fishes, larger than either of the parents and after one year they were a beautiful group with long fin extensions, the males were consistently bigger than the females. I show a pic below. They got the bulkiness from the male of my strain and then they got the beautiful reflective scales from the female. You can see this on the fish in the middle of the pic and on the right at the top. Note that these fishes are in my discus tanks without any gravel which is why they do not show their black stripes.

I will write the next episode after this......

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    No Matt,

You can manage that very well and I have kept them together for many years, however you have to know what you are doing and you should not combine angels from your lfs with your discus, you can pick up massive problems. As I breed all my angels myself, I do not have this disease transfer problem from the pet shops.

My next episode will follow after this....

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Um tracyp, sweetie Prof B just said that the angels were in his discus tank 2 posts above yours.... I am absolutely not an expert in keeping angels but lets just read plz. thanks =)

Ok prof i see, the angels at the lfs some times have diseases and stuff, and you breed your angels by yourself so they dont have those diseases ok thanks =)

    So next episode....

I breed my angels for my own purposes and not as a commercial venture, so I do not let them breed all the time and I only do so when the fishes are getting on in years. Well those fishes are now four years old and although a few of them have passed on I still have a significant school of these and I want to show you what they look like now. I am keeping them in a big group with my normal domestics. The males are about 20 to 22 cm tall (please hold a ruler up and see how high that really is please!) and the females are about 15 cm tall. I show two males and then the group of fishes in my lounge tank (550 litres) at the moment. Nice, eh!!!!

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
