Gorgeous @Jwh!!! So you joined the mad crowd did you?....

I must admit they never really interested me either until my crazy son got his..
The older they get, the more character they develop and they are really awesome fish to keep
If you told me 5 years ago that i would be saying this today, i would have said you mad
I still have Ray with me and when I switch on the lights in the morning he pounces up and down and blows the sand greeting you

I also had no intention of keeping Rays.

Last Xmas, I went to a lfs that gets lots of wierd and wonderful oddballs
The owner often takes me to his qt section to show me what's new.
On this occassion he showed me the Rays saying that that they were about to go into the main shop. But if I was interested, they were mine.
The rest they say, is history.

Runs away in terror screaming profanities and waving arms hysterically falling down every few steps after reading the price...
Jokes aside, you guys have some very beautiful animals, unfortunately I don't think I could ever afford to join the ranks of keeping rays. Beautiful fish.

Motoro rays aren't as pricey as the Leopoldi, was offered two recently at R3500ea.

My pair of hystrix cost me less than the 14 Discus I had before them.

The BD are quite expensive, but there are other Rays that are less so.

Ok, that's not bad. Scan read the thread as it's quite long and when I saw 35k for a pair I got pale.

    The BD are expensive.
So are other Rays, but less so. In fact, maybe better to get experience with one of the common, less expensive species first.

@Jwh.... I have tried to do the pellets in chopped worms but I still get told to eat it myself lol... I think its just the luck of the drawer.. your rays are looking good, how have you found there growth.. have to agree, they are awesome fish to keep.

@Reedfish.... i agree when it come to having the rays with other fish, makes it difficult to get them on pellets. however the pups are alone with Geo Babies so it gives me time to let the food sit and i have not had any luck with it...

@ BoelderBeestie... as Reedfish and Jwh have said, you don't have to spend 35 on rays as the Motoro rays sell anything from 3500 up to 5000 depending on the exchange rate at the time.. like Reedfish mentioned and from your profile pic you should know that a good quality Discus will set you back about the same depending on the size you get.

@Cesar In the time I've had them, they must have added about 50mm in diameter, and bodies and tails have filled out nicely. What diameter are yours now, I can see myself planning a new tank for them sometime next year.

@Cesar Yes only saw that it was for a breeding pair after I posted. Always had it in my mind that they are really pricey, very glad it's not the case. All the adds I've ran across over the webs was also extremely expensive and that was a few years ago. How's the private market pricing, the same?

I think it depends on what you get.
Motoro and some of the other common species are reasonable.

But those BD, and some of the fancy crosses, as well as some of the new, rare species can be very expensive.

Like with my aro. Got the silver because of the price of the asians and needed to learn its husbandry. God forbid something should happen to him but I'll probably get an asian after him. Will go for a green first though then later a red. I'm stressing over my fish enough as is haha.

Got my discus at R150 each so wasn't too worried in the beginning with them. Have a friend in the fish business and he valued them for me two weeks ago. I'll just say that the worry factor increased dramatically.

Oh yes, forgot to add. Will not be scan reading threads again. Felt like a poopol after reading it properly and like Cesar said I should know better haha.

@Jwh... with the two that were born at home I have found that the male has grown ALOT quicker than the female. the male now is about 15cm disk and the female about 13cm. I have found that wile they were on earthworms alone they were doing good. but the min I got them onto the hake and prawn they have added size like crazy. the BDs are about 13cm and will be interesting to see how the growth between the two will be.. have you decided on the size of tank you will be getting ?

@BoelderBeestie.... as far as I know at the moment there is no body breeding them local and you have to rely on the stores to bring in for you and for this matter we are still having to pay the prices they decide to ask. R150 for the Discus was cheep, I know when I had I was paying R900each. at the end of the day any exotic fish is going to cost you a bit..

@Cesar yip. Mine is irreplaceable for me financially now. A lot of money swimming in that tank right now. As for rays I would have to get a tank with a proper footprint for them and now that's not possible so would have to wait a while before taking on the responsibility. But with that said I do some impulsive stuff sometimes.

Another issue is that if looked after correctly, they are said to live over 15 years. So the annual cost isn't that much (I am an accountant )

@BoelderBeestie .. Its still a long way to go but providing all goes well the idea is to be able to breed the black diamonds and make them available at a realistic price
So.. lets hold thumbs that all goes well
