    You telling me those actually still exist I thought they just pumped it raw in to the sea and rivers so they can pay off their big houses, 5 star overseas holidays and flashy BMW X5's. Wow there is nothing like a pleasant surprise on a Saturday morning!

    The WWTW in provinces where there is a functioning government (Cape Town, Paarl and Plett won most of the awards at the WISA conference in May) actually works pretty well. The issues they are having is illegal connections industry makes to the sewerage grid. Obviously they then dump waste at a much higher COD and flow that the system was designed for and the retention time on the system isn't what it was designed to be and thus the out flow doesn't meet standards. There is a HUGE drive by the municipalities, DAFF and Water Affairs to stop illegal dumping of effluent.

    Many water users irrigate their waste at a MUCH higher COD value than what they are allowed. The law says 400 but I know of sites where they irrigate at over 30 000. River discharge limit is 75. Many industrial users have huge WWTW much more advanced than most municipal systems. Some industrial users actually clean their water to the point where it can be reused. They take the waste water to river discharge (in many cases cleaner than the actual river) and then put it thru a normal drinking water works which brings it back to potable water limits.

    Any more questions :D

    Seeing as you are offering were dose Cape Town water dump their water in the sea or the black river and also the waist pipe that is in camps bay in front of the police station is that camps bay's effluent or storm water drainage coz the Cray fish are the biggest one can find on the whole peninsula just in that spot.

    Camps Bay used to dump their waste in the ocean - not sure if it still happens.

    That's quite interesting @Henk Hugo, I know the process quite well. Do you have any link that you can PM me that has some more information?

    Don't be fooled @jpvd007 like Henk Hugo said, only the ones in big cities are functional. The surrounding small cities are overloaded or they serve as a channel that directs the sewage into the river.

    Let's make sure our tanks don't end up the same way! LOL

    @bylaag - will do.

    One of the towns in the Western Cape has the funniest setup. Sewerage farm discharge is upriver from the potable water intake in the river... I was like WTF?!?!?!?! :huh:

    Yes that's like an Engineers worst nightmare! Bottled water sound more and more like the way to go. But then again you don't know where it's been bottled. Or a RO plant.
