Actually rainbows are more like guppies in the spawning side. At least the Kutubus were. Going to move a male and female Boesemani this evening. Have selected the best looking ones. Hopefully I will have the same sucsess with them.

my male goes crazy on every water change yes.

would a spawning mop work for rainbows? or does it have to be a moss patch?

Spawning mops are perfect. I'm just too lazy to make some and have the moss.

i thought would just be easier to pull that out. and then would you have to medicate the water like you do with angel fish or do they not go vrot?

sorry im steeling your trade secrets here @pierreschoonraad

I used mops on my threadfins. Worked okay but I got better results moving the fish around.

When you spawn fish in the presence of other fish many of the eggs become food. Sad but true

you mean, taking the fish out into another tank for breeding?
thats what ill do yes, i have Rams in my big tank and they are like vultures, waiting for eggs to drop

I had spawning mops in my tank with my 200 threadfins but only found a few eggs in each mop at a time. When I moved a pair to a different tank for a few days I got many more fry. If you have the tank space the mops are probably better as its continuous production but as they fry grow they eat the smaller ones so you would need to start a new fry tank each week or so. The batch process gives you a larger number of fry that are the same age but overall its probably fewer fry.

No problem Ammar. No trade secrets here. I'm also learning as we go on.

I throw a few shrimp into the tank to keep the eggs clean and fungus free. I know some people use Mertiolate blue with eggs which should prevent fungus growth.

Just a few picks of the fry's new home.

First foto is of the tank. Outlet is about 1/3 from the left. Inlet is via a 250 L/h pump, from the diy wet/dry sump, and has a spraybar pointing to the right hand glas. Behind the rock and wood, in the left back corner, I have another 250 L/h filter that pushes water down which should remove all uneaten food and poop to the open space on the right to make it easy for cleaning.

Second foto is of the diy wet/dry sump. As nobody actually sees this part of the tank looks was not considered but only functunality. The sump part is a meat tray I used previously as sump on the moss tank. Water enters the trays through a spray bar onto batting, the orange bag is just the to prevent the water from splashing all over the place. Second tray contains bio balls, in this case the orange bag is to help spread the dripping water accross the whole tray. All of this is still above water level. Third tray contains ceramic rings that were in the 4ft sump. Below this I have some coarse sponges and pieces of clay tiles that should add some more biological filtration.

Defnitly not a work of art but it works as intended.d540fd731c47b0b288a1f143e0379659.jpge0187788aeaf2c6d0fa697d1f00aa7c1.jpg

I like the trickle filter thru office equipment what are those stick you have in the sump.
I found lava rock for 25 a kg was thinking of using it instead of ceramic.

Not stick but off cut pieces of clay tiles. Lava rocks will work very good

Almost 100 days in and biggest fry starting to show their true colors more.

Boesemani male and female in the spawning tank. Keeping fingers crossed that they will make me as happy as the Kutubu parents179140ec20c6596549e1dc35c7b32fc3.jpg
