Power outage emergency- please help!

    Our neighbors are luckily very understanding and we’ll run the generator tonight, hubby getting extra petrol :thumbup:

    Happy to report that, to the best of my knowledge, I haven’t lost a single fish so far!
    Generator cut out between 2am and 7am (ran out of petrol in the night) but doing a great job.
    Ammonia and nitrites 0.

    Thanks everyone for the tips and support.

    Power is still out. City of Cape Town has a backlog due to extensive damage across the city, and might be understaffed too due to COVID.

    The trampoline and jungle gym had to push these heavy pots right off the deck to get to where they landed. Aloe ferox decapitated. Jungle gym landed on my kniphofia and clivias. Trampoline went straight over that 6 foot wall plus electric fence :eek:

    Wow thats hectic. Glad your fish have made it through the night.

    Something similar happened to my trampoline about a year back. I then got heavy duty tent pegs and pegged it in place - it didnt move at all up until the springs started breaking free and the frame rusted through at which point it was disassembled and relocated to the local tip.

    Our doorbell just rang 23h30 it was the City of Cape Town saying they just fixed the cable, our power is back on and we can switch off the generator. Now that’s service :thumbup:

    is there a market for battery powered heaters that can be inserted into the tanks for issue like these as an alternative to ups devices and generators?

    Perhaps yes but with a (close to) 48h power cut the batteries would also not last long?
    For normal loadshedding (2,5h) and sensitive fish in winter that might be cool!

    Heaters can pull a lot of energy, I think insulating tanks will be the cheapest option

    You can buy insulating material they use for Geysers at Builders Warehouse and use it to wrap up your tanks. It does a better job of insulating your tanks than using blankets.

    Also if you have those round garden rocks you can clean them and boil them on a gas stove for an hour in hot water the rock will be super hot and retain heat so just drop them in the tank.

    No, but you can get a 300-watt solar kit that would be able to run a 300-watt heater, but at the entry price you might as well look at a small silent generator.

    I have one of these, they are pricey but the run almost silently makes a lot less noise than a normal generator and kicks out 2KVA which is more than enough.

    Maybe a metal bottle and a gas burner? This seems like it would work for load shedding or as a quick fix.

    They certainly went the extra mile! In the middle of the night, bitterly cold.
    We also have fantastic and extremely friendly garbage pickup staff. Just a shoutout of appreciation/ credit where it’s due :thumbup:

    I would say the noise is a big factor. We ran it from the garage but the whole neighborhood could hear it. Literally.
