Stay away from the CFLs and the fittings then.
You might electrocute yourself or your fishes unless you can seal off the fitting and connections in some way.

I've got 1 CFL at the moment. Going to replace the HOB with an internal power filter

    Update on my CFL:

I have been using them 3 of them on my 162L 800 x 450 x 450 tank with diy CO2 since this thread was started. I now have to prune every week and is actually getting to a point were the plants are growing to quickly and becoming a pain to prune every week. As far are the lights go i am very happy with the outcome. There were a few problems with moisture build up in the beginning but i overcame this by putting a pc fan in to extract the moisture , what i also do is duct tape up the fittings from the base of the "ballast" of the CFL to the fitting in the tank. So far i have had one light go but because it it has a 1 year guarantee i took it back and they replaced it.
    Thanks
    Antony

Im having a problem with moisture now as well, do you think you could post a pic of you fan. I am wanting to add another light to my tank in the middle but dont want to do it just yet because of all the water in my tank at the moment! So much evapouration (because its cold now it condenses in the lid a lot more). You just use a normal PC fan and just wire it up to a cell phone charger or what? (Thats how my biltong box is done at least :p)

I'm running 2x12Watt CFL's in my 30cm x 22c x 22cm tank. The tank is brighter than my light for the lounge!! We actually dont even use the lights for the lounge anymore!

guys...i know this is an old thread...

What bout using the philips genie bulbs in a cfl floodlight fitting???

Wont the floodlight assist in concentrating the light into the tank and thus be brighter than normal?
