    Hi Dolphin
I don't wonna question the truth of your statment but rather try to understand it. If I put a CFL with a reflector horizontally over a tank the light from the side and the tip gets reflected into the water while if i put it vertically i loose quite a bit of light to the sides except i have a specially designed parabol reflector??
    Can you pls explain
    Txs

Thank you Gaawie, please post some pics when you do.

Johan008 - They don't get wet enough to cause any damage, well not yet anyways. As long as they don't hang in the water i am sure they will be fine.
....And don't let the canopy fall into the tank, thats 220V AC.

Hi, there's an article on the net somewhere I think on the planted forums ( will try to find it and post the link ) in which the author conducted several tests with the use of a par meter and the results thereof are that the best results are obtained when the tip is pointed into the tank. These tests also considered the use of a reflector.

That only applies to the spiral cfl, which is used to cover in radius, whereas u-shaped clf's are used to cover a wider area.

without any analysis or stats, I would go with the data for the spirals when applying the u-shaped to any of my setups...

But I have to agree it doesn't make sense to me. In any case i dont have enough space in my hood to change them to downwards
Never the less thanks for your trouble

Surely if you got some reflective material in the hood, sideways shouldnt make too much of a difference..?

check the par readings from the 1st pic and you'll see the difference between vertical and horizontal even with the use of a reflector. most canopies will not allow for vertical, this is the problem. the info I share is free so you're welcome to use it or not, no worries :blink1:

So who found the cheapest Genie energy saver so far?? I see Makro has them for R49.

I have a 1.2m That I want to build a canopy for. And if I can raise it just a little I put them vertical. Maybe put 4 of these in there :p

I've wired up a single genie cfl but its not enough. How can i add on another 2 more to my existing light setup(wiring etc)? Seems like im running out of space under this 3ft canopy

Speedz,CFLs gets wired in parrallel if you want to use only one lightswitch.
In other words you just wire from the existing cfl to the next wir "a" to "a" and "b" to "b".

Safety Warning:Unplug all Wiring from Mains frist!LOL
