Peeling Angelfish, advice needed?

@Reedfish couldn't agree more, the LFS's where 99.99999% of fish are bought sure as hell don't use RO, wonder if they even dechlor?

 

Ill have to make a plan to get better results then. Ill try using RO mixed with tap water. My big Angel died last night, whatever it had was quite bad its head lost all coloration, looked pale yellow. Lets hope my other fish will be fine. Only two baby angels and one big one left in the tank with the other types.

Here's what I would do. Do a water change with tap water, no RO and ad seachem stability. Determine if the water is fowled or not, this will determine how much water you will change. If it's vrot and it stinks do smaller changes daily(20%), if it smells like nothing or earthy go a little bit bigger. This may sound weird doing smaller changes on dirty water but you don't want to bring fish from dirty to clean water too quickly, it will kill the weak and sick as the parameters will change too fast. There's no quick way of doing this. That 20% tap water each day will add buffer to the water and even if it ends up having a ph of 9 at the end of the week that's fine as you now know your tank is stable. Stable tank = most important, the rest is a luxury.

If you really want to change your water later on to make it "perfect" for them do it in a aging barrel and let it aerate overnight. You can mix your RO/tap ratio in
this barrel and after 24 hours the water should be stable to use but in all honesty I would just give them tap water. All my tanks run on normal tap water. My discus are getting special treatment with aged(24 hours), aerated and heated, that's it. The only time I would recommend changing water parameters is while breeding.

For maintenance after you know your bio is good again(positive nitrate reading) I would do 50% twice a week and adjust as I go along as the tank settles. It's good practice to do a water change when the nitrate reading reaches 15-20ppm. Good luck and let us know if you came right.

Good afternoon.

A short term option, if you would not like to loose any further Angles or any other fish due to your situation at hand, go to your local Petshop and get some water from them. Their water is most of the time pristine. Their water would also contain all your good bacteria, and would be treated accordingly.
This might help in stabilizing your tank as well.
Just make sure that you trust the pet shop and feel comfortable adding the water to your tank, A good mindset also keeps fishies alive.

 

@Gustav this won't work as the aerobic bacteria you need is not in the water column but grows on surfaces in the tank and filter. Clean fresh tap water dechlorinated and adding bacteria like stability is the only thing that will show results. Most Petshop's water is anything but pristine, it usually has very high nitrate as they tend to overstock and can carry disease because they get new fish all the time without quarantining them properly.

Very Good argument Boelder.
I had some good luck with my pet shop's water, but as I said, I trust their water. But truth be told, I only fetched water from them 2 times, and not huge amounts.

I would however keep your advice in mind the next time I leaning that way.

 

@Gustav When you take fish home for the first time from a petshop and you trust their water it would actually help with the shock and will be beneficial in that sense but with fish that's already home I wouldn't risk it, just for the sake of them rotating stock so quick.

@Miller, I agree with @BoelderBeestie .. Water changes with clean tap water treated with Prime and add the Stability following the instructions on the bottle.
That should sort your problem out

Thanks Guys!! I have a beautiful female Krib I do like them. My othet big Angel is fine but Im going to organise a home for him to be safe because by the sounds of it my tank is overstocked and Im not getting rid of my phantom plecos. Ill look for a male Krib. I have a lot of Anubias and Java ferns, I got the Angels because my tank is high and Id like a mid/too water fish that wont kill my rummy nose tetras or eat my plants. .. my Platinum Blue Angel is the spare tank is starting to look good, just him in the small tank. His fins are up and spread out and its eating well.

My other big Angel seems fine but Im not going to risk keeping him until I sort out my water. If someone has a tank that is suitable for him please contact me and you can have him free of charge, you just need to collect him. its sad to let it go but I think its better just incase I lose it.
