Just remember to monitor pH ongoing. Peat brings it down all the time. Dangerous if it is in filter. You will have to remove it at some point?

i thought the filter is where its suppose to be,and is not suppose to be a slow long term method of decreasing the ph as oppose to a quick chemical solution?

I have only just seen this post . The peat you bought has been enriched with fertizer and lime(calcium ) has also been added . Peat in its raw state has no or very little nutrients in it and nurseries enrich it . What you want is peat that has not anything added to it .I bought some here near cape town called canadian spagnum peat moss but any peat should work . Just look on the bag and if you see enriched or calcium added or something similar than dont buy it

There is two methods. The one you do and the one where you pre treat your water. There is differant methods to pre treat, but it all envolves getting your water through as much peat as possible, as quickly as possible. The pH then drops like a stone and you have to stop the process before the pH drops too low. Also see farmers post. I bought canadian peat from a nursery.

See my system here. I do not do it anymore, because I hate tea coloured water! Sorry Marco!

I am trying everything. In the end, I can see, I will end up with a RO system. At the moment I am lucky and catch some rain water, which when I mix 50/50 with tap, gives me exactly what I want. Well, the ratio is close to 50/50, I am still experimenting with that.

Just a correction. It is not 50/50. Turned out to be 5 parts rain water plus two parts tap water. That gives a pH of 7. Remember, that is my tap water and rain water.

I suppose it could be different every time. Best is to take small samples, mix it and measure. That way you will be very close to the real thing. Probably work like that with RO water as well. I do not know. Will cross that bridge when I get there.
