Parents eating wrigglers

How do you cull them if you don't mind me asking?

 

I put them in the freezer but going to start using clove oil, freezing them is quick but a bit cruel.

 

Hammer time . Seriously. I had to cull some sterbai corys that had tumors. Did one at a time in a plastic bag and used a hammer. Messy but quick.

Update: 4 day old swimmers going strong, with no further deaths. About 40-50 fry currently surviving.

 

No, I was running a carbon block to take out the chlorine. Was working great since last year November when I got it. I changed out the cartridge a few days before the incident. Think it might have been a dud. Won't trust those things ever again, the chlorine test didn't show any and while I was troubleshooting I smelled the barrel but it was too faint to smell properly and I then took a glass and had a drink, and there it was, a nice crisp chlorine taste. The other tanks wasn't affected as I only did a quick clean on them that day with very little water added.

On the grow out I went big to be able to leave it alone for the next day as I was getting a new fish and didn't want to touch my tanks the day the fish arrived as it was after work and I had to get the fish in it's tank first so I had to touch it and the bag water. I work on new fish last when I do maintenance. I handled the situation very badly though as I went into full panic mode, heart palpitations the works. Now I know to relax and clear my head first before sorting out a disaster. A few ml of prime would have saved my fish that day but chlorine was the last thing on my mind as the test showed 0.

This is what chlorine does, swells the fish and makes them rock hard like plastic, even the soft fins felt like plastic. You can see the pelvic fin is so hard it props the fish up. They didn't clamp or stopped eating, they where producing slime like crazy and went pitch black and sank to the bottom. I first though it was my buffering but it wasn't that, I'm using shells now rather to keep the ph from falling too fast and my tanks are locked at 6.5 now with a slight drop over a few day to 6.45.

Ai, sorry little ones...and now I'm crying at work hahaha.

 

Thats super sad. I felt helpless when i lost my first batch. Rookie mistake- ammonia etc was sky high. I had no clue though as I have been doing regular water changes. However at that time i had gravel in my tank and did not syphyn the gravel.

 

There's always something with these fish hey.

Nice man, you're not in the clear yet. I only start to allocate babas to people at 4-5 months as some deformities are hard to spot when they are still small and only let the fish go after 5-6 months. You have to look out for eyes that aren't the same size or not parallel. All fins must be accounted for. Dorsal and anal fins must be well formed and rounded. Spine must be straight. Body must be round and not elongated like a rugby ball. Gill plates mustn't be short. Deformed parrot like beaks. Growth must be good at +- 6-7cm at 3 months. So there's a few things to consider.

If there's anything wrong like mentioned above it's a cull.
