Plant them into the substrate, but if they have longer roots or big stems push them into the PFP, it does not matter. Bottom line is that as the roots grow they will get into the PFP eventually.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

haha its not such a bad question i also thought about this....it makes no difference as roots will grow..its just a bit easier to plant into the capping sand then into the pfp as when you dig the whole the pfp will float to the top...plant as deep into the capping saubstrate as possible without disturbing the pfp layer.

    my opinion

Franna, I wouldn't suggest planting them too deep as alot of plants start rotting if their stem is covered. The roots will find their way to the substrate.

(This is just what I've read and have done the same... apologies if there's a better way)

I went to builders today to get pfp and chemicult. But there were 10 differant types. so i bought the chemicult 3:1:6 (46) water soluble plant food with trace elements.. it was the only blue one.

i think that your decision to empty the tank is a bit hasty..i use the PFP for my orchids and when soaking the PFP it does release alot of tannin into the water...after a good soake and rinse alot of the tannin is rinsed out..my personal opinion would be to get your filtration sorted and add some carbon for 24 hours to help sponge up some of the tannins...also you dont say if thats what the tank looked like when full as if you had of filled the tank up it would have diluted alot of that colour...but hey thats my opinion and like i have said often enough opinions are like a holes everyone has one...think this tank would have looked awesome planted..the dimensions look nice..care to share the size as it looks alot higher than standard...thanx

Thanks for the advice Shaun, seeing as though i moved house it was not a hassle to empty. This was a pic after i half filled the tank and had run the powerhead for 24 h.
Once i filled the tank again there was some more leaching, but my cannister has cleared the water quite well. The tank is 1200 L x 450 D x 550 H, will post an update pic this evening. Cheers.

I got the ppf brick and the chemicult at benbel. Use the chemicult for hydroponics, payd R55 for a 500g bag and the ppf brick was R28.
