When this article first appreared on Practical Fish Keeping he had a gf, now he doesn't... Point is this hobby requires sacrifices to be made. Maybe he fed her to the catfish

The Two Oceans Aquariums does use acrylic, worked there when they were installing it. One panel got scratched and the dude that scratched it stood there with a orbital polisher for a couple of days polishing scratch out :).
Acrylic also doesnt magnify with thickness like glass.

I think this is why a lot of these big tanks are limited to "tank buster fish"

A marine tank that size would cost an absolute fortune in salt, RO water and chemicals for all the coral etc.
A planted tank would need such high output lighting, that it would probably cost you a pretty penny just to light the tank (let alone the undergravel ferts, or the column ferts.)

Having said that, doesn't marine need high lighting too?

Depends on the corals and other light dependent corals and invert you have. IMO such a size tank is most ideally suited to freshwater tanks, or otherwise fish-only marine tanks.

A tank that size needs mother nature to shine on it ... - why build a pool when you can build your own planted stream?

Rob on the marine forums used 70mm laminated glass for his monster tank...
And natural sunlight is the only way to go with a tank this size, why bother with electric lighting when you've already got the sun for free?
