now this blacklist

Yer, Look, We are just trying to assist you guys in not getting into lumber. AS I said, if you already have a blacklisted fish, then theres not much point in beating you over the head with it, but if through the showing of this list, we can help you not to support the LFS's illegal trading, and avoid getting into the situation where you have these species, then it has been worth it.

The only way an LFS will stop stocking blacklisted fish is if we as a fish keeping community stop buying.

I guess it just goes to show that research is not done enough by the average fishkeeper, and we give into impulse buys? Either that, or there is a blatant lack of concern with regards to the law?

I cannot stress this enough, but we really encourage ALL fishkeepers to go and do their research correctly, and see what requirements that specific fish needs, and what other fish it can/cannot be housed with. And thats before even considering whether it is blacklisted or not. Repeatedly we are seeing more and more fish being kept in the wrong conditions or with incompatable tank mates. This just goes to emphasize that the LFS's (generally) really don't give a hoots, as long as they make money! They'll selll you blacklisted fish, and sell you other fish that just are not compatable with any of the fish you have! THey are guilty of many sins, so why support them at all?

so if for instance i see a fish in the petshop thats on the blacklist and i know that this pet store has no reguards for the fish they keep or to whom they sell him.should i (a)report him?(b)not buy it or (c)buy it and give it a better home until his last day.maybe i'm just being difficult.

 

Oscar freak, It is illegal to trade (buy, give away) or keep illegal fish!
The Lfs should be informed by you that it is illegal, and they should return it to the wholesaler, failing that (they will ignore you, and sell it to the next uninformed customer!) :sick:
You should report it! to DEAT or SPCA.
Why would you take on the burden, knowingly that it is illegal, to buy it and support this illegal trading and create a market for it! :evil:
If a LFS see that something is selling, they are going to replace it with more of the same fish!

thanx henk i got a problem with my neighbours dumping on the pavement and iv tried a hundred different numbers just keep getting referred and referred,off topic i know but see what happens when people communicate......people get helped and things happen.thanx again.u can delete it now.

I actually think there are very few people who do research. How many of you have seen parents with their children picking out fish and they are not just getting guppies?

 

in my opinion, the only thing on the south african government's mind right now is the world cup, and after that it will go back to worrying about how many new cars and new wives each MP can aquire. I am very good friends with a nature conservation officer in kzn, and he has told me that unless a nature cons officer willingly decides to walk into a LFS and conviscate illegal creatures (fish in this case), nothing is going to be done about it. KZN is the only province ( that im aware of ) that you dont need a permit to keep and/or breed exotic animals ( be it fish, reptiles, birds, warthogs or whatever ), and once its in the country, they can be transported under the radar to every part of SA. Im sure they are more concerned about people keeping and caging our local endangered species, than worrying about exotics that could escape into our eco systems, and ruin them ( this is a very sad concept ), and unfortunatley we on TASA are the minority, and the majority rules, so if i can give one word of advice to every TASA member, report any signs of illegal fish you may come across in your LFS, this is the only way south africas eco-system stands a chance. there are plecostomus that have been let out into KZN's streams and small river systems, and they are breeding and multiplying. They are not a pest as YET, but could soon turn out to be one.

 

I totally agree with Hobo-Joe. We shouldn't just sit back and let other people fight for us. If we see illegal things going down in our LFS we should do something about it (easier said than done though because not many people like confrontation, I for one am included in this majority).

 

Another good point is to know your facts if confronting eg. a LFS. As they might know something you dont, so if you bomb them with truth and FACTS tey are hopeless.

 

I just tried phoning that 0800 number and nobody answers like so many other "hotlines" in this country,a person gives up hope.

 

I have e-mailed Dr Marietta Bronkhurst who is in the department of animal and animal products import and export department in the government. I have requested for a national list of fish that are allowed to be imported into the country, aswell as prohibited species.

I will do. I have also E-Mailed SAPTA (south african pet traders association) and asked them for the same thing. I will hopefully get a response quite soon.

Here is a bit of a stupid Question and I don't know if it was answered before.
the question is we have a few international people on here right?
so their blacklist is not the same as our right?
so if they had to ask question related to a fish that is blacklisted here will we be allowed to help them or what?
