Nice pics. Fish look rather healthy.

The filter is a Powerhead with attachable pre-filter. It should have a sponge inside the plastic with something else inside the sponge to act as a filter.

@allyzone hey, i think the tank looks very good, that is slightly larger than the standard size and you can see the difference. it looks good... when you split the fish up, keep the group with the bala sharks in that tank seeing as its the larger tank and the bala's like more space to swim..

after you split your fish up i'm sure that you will see that less of your fish are dying..

    cheers :)

This almost sounds like Bio Balls in the filter. Are these "funny things" round?

I also had one of these a while back to your self a favor, this is just my 2 cents worth. Go get yourself some Seachem Matrix and some filter floss. do this just with the first section meaning the bottom unit.

put some filter floss on the bottom of the unit then add a 250mg bottle of Seachem matrix then put some filter floss on top of the matrix again.

Then give it 2-3 weeks for new bacteria to grow on the new filter media.

When the 2-3 weeks has passed do the same for with the other unit.

This will be a kick ass system then, the black stuff your are talking about it similar to plastic bio balls. Bacteria grow better on stuff like matrix cause their is more place for it to attach itself to.

A bottle of 250mg of Seachem matrix costs me like R50 and a 25g of filter floss is like R5 so it wont cost you to much will just be a better filter setup then you got at the moment.

if you do decide to change filter media, please keep at least 50% of the old foam in the filter...

just as a side note... the pots and rockwool on your live plants must be removed or at least the rockwool. It breaks up in the water and infect the fish's respiratory systems

I clean it with the water pressure... Hold the balls and blast the dirt away..the green thing i use the pressure to take most of the dirt out then rubb it together and squeeze it.. slowly the water gets less brown

Never clean the bio-media with tap water. Only use water from your tank. Only clean the sponge in tap water if it's being used to filter out larger things in the water.

@allyzone - Do you mean tap water. You are removing the benificial bacteria - Must have posted at the same time.

mmm i assume you blast it with the tap or hose pipe?

this is not really a good way to do this, as the chlorine in the tap water kills the good bacteria on your green thingy, rather rinse it very gently in some of the old water that came out of the tank, its not necessary to get rid of all the brown stuff, as a lot of the bacteria actually live in that brown stuff and you dont want to kill the good bacteria, good bacteria keep the fish healthy..

try to never let your filter stuff get touched by water that comes directly out of the tap, only treated water should go into the tank, or come into contact with the filters, etc..

Yes put the filter floss or foam at the bottom remove all your black balls and replace it with Seachem Matrix remember only one section at a time, I see yours has got two compartments.
