Your tank looks awesome. The 'chops do it justice.

Just to clarify. Sometimes what we think is a single species turns out to be two or more species that look virtually identical, but do not naturally interbreed. We call these cryptic species. There are countless examples in all the kingdoms of life, and it is one of the drivers of the current expansion in the numbers of recognised species. In the case of Rasbora heteromorpha, there exists suspicion that the wild-collected animals in the trade represent multiple species, not just one. Obviously they are collected from many localities, as the fish in the trade don't all come from one creek.

A particular name can only apply to one species, of which the individuals all potentially can interbreed in nature. Likewise a particular species can only have one valid name. Many cases find themselves in a grey area, and that is why we see taxonomists often taking different views. Think of the many scientific names for one well-known species (eg. the guppy), vs the declaration that what was thought to be one species actually consists of three genetically distinct ones. Does it matter to aquarists? I don't think so. It tends to matter to obsessive collectors, e.g. cycads and succulents, as they strive for a full collection (and often do much harm to the environment and their own finances in the process). There is a lot of madness in fishkeeping, but fortunately that particular pathology seems to be rare around here ;).

Some cichlid keepers are a little like that, keeping various varieties that have a locality attached to them since they are often distinct from others.

Cichlids on either side of the congo rapids are the same species but there is some noticeable genetic distinction between populations on either side

Wild collected corys and all their trade names

On another forum one guy gets in a lot of exotic corys and all the names like lazer and whatever makes it interesting.

I think polypterus are the most cryptic group

In the end, the view of taxonomists is very different to that of hobbyists. There are good species with dozens of colour patterns and varieties in one single species, and then there are others with almost no physical differences in appearance being made into two different species. The scientists that study a particular family will have an established view of what drives speciation and what is considered valid boundaries for those characteristics within one species. For instance, in fish they look closely at fin ray and scale counts, which to the average hobbyist means nothing. Part of the reason for that is the fact that we like our fish more when they're alive, while ichthyologists kill the fish to preserve them. Another factor that has transformed taxonomy is DNA/RNA analysis. In particular, mitochondrial RNA and (in the case of plants) chloroplast RNA profiling is at the heart of the identification of many cryptic species. It is worth reading the article on the description of the Oropuche guppy and the clarification of the Endler guppy, because it is a neat example of these principles.

You might well be right about the polypterus. It would be interesting to know whether someone is actively working on resolving their genetics.

Now you know why I asked you about yours. This guy sat patiently at the lfs for 3 weeks until I made up my mind.
