    You'll need ammonia, nitrite and nitrate to check the progression and completion of the cycle, there are a number available, don't use the dipstick types, not very accurate.

    Hey guys , does anyone know if borehole water can be used in a planted tank successfully ... I live near north cliff and water is clean enough for drinking ? What are ur thoughts

    Hi,

    I think you will be looking at hard water around 200 to 400 ppm in TDS. I am not sure how this will affect plants. Just do some research on the type of plants you want to keep. I am sure some will be able to tolerate hard water. I would recommend you ask the same question on TASA. They will help you out.

    I know you said that the water is clean enough for drinking but what I would be worried about is small trace amounts of heavy metals. These can be harmful to fish at very low levels.

    King of DIY gives a quick rundown off 11 reasons your fish can die and how to avoid it. Good overview for beginners I think, obviously not an exhaustive list. I would’ve added chlorine & chloramines for example and using proper water conditioners (eg Seachem Prime) that take care of those things (especially in pur context where lots of stuff is added to our tap water).

    Good vid for beginners. What to research (water parameters, fish profiles etc).
    And quarantine. Wish I listened to the quarantine part right from the beginning. Had to learn the hard way!
