No Problem, I never hold a grudge!!

I realise reading back that sying Oscars are Rediculous is not the best description of what I was thinking!

I meant from the point of view that people get sold a little fish that grows enormous, and eats everything in sight, and the poor unsuspecting owner gets left with a nightmare because the LFS didn't warn them!! Drives me nutts!! I didn't mean the actual fish!! Although to me, I don't like being limited to one huge fish (that would gratefully eat my hand if it got the opportunity) in a huge tank, no matter how much their personality grows on me. I'd much rather have more variation.

I can see why people love their Oscars so much though!

yes, i was never big of fan oscars as well, until i adopted one from wito-zn, their personality is absolutely amazing, it grew on me instantly...i like oscars, even though they get big they are still cool...i have a few severums for variations...but my main aim to keep discus eventually...

 

I've successfully kept a young oscar with a Tiger Shovelnose and a large pleco, no problems. But we must remember that oscars aren't the worst there are; try keeping a Jack Dempsey or a Wolf Cichlid...

If I had a fish shop I would have signs all over the place reminding people to cycle their tanks, introduce the fish slowly, research before you buy; if the mouth is big, it will probably eat your other fish, etc... It would lead to more satisfied customers whose fish survive, enjoy the hobby and come back to buy more...

just remember, whilst you are doing a good service, you could also run the possibility of foreclosure on your shop, thats the reason why LPS sell us fish under false pretences, to make the sale and take your money...

 

with the names of the plants listed scientifically ofcourse . . .

 

It must be really hard to make it as an honest and genuinely concerned fish shop owner. Unfortunately that is a reality with most businesses...

 

I tend to agree slightly with the way LPS sell their fish... I mean, let's face it... if we were told to cycle a tank for 14 days before putting fish in, and research blah blah blah... I can bet half of you wouldn't have taken the effort. The "adrenaline" rush of buying the tank and the fish happens at that very moment. When you can't "take it all" in one shopping spree... then why bother.

New people interested in the hobby don't realise that buying fish is not like buying a dog or cat. FOr a dog or cat you got to the LPS, but the dog, and never go back. Fish is different however, we spend any time we get in a pet store with fish!

 

a friend had some texan ciclids in with his oscars. about half size of the oscars, and stood their ground, but the oscars were sill growing and they grew up together.

adding new smaller fish? =live food/prey

 

ohh,y ya hating the G man ,anyways if you want a good fish that will live with the oscar try convict then ,dempseys and possbly malawis
