@Stever, the pictures arent very clear but looks like it could be a Jack Dempsey as @Hendre said.

Looking at his size and being a cichlid... your two missing neon sized fish might very well have become a snack for him...

Not a Jack Dempsey, look at the eyes and stripes... more likely a Marbled Headstander, Abramites hypselonotus. If I'm correct about that, be cautious. They do grow a little bulky and can have a mean streak every and then.

If it helps this fish does tend to swim/hang around at a diagonal angle with head facing the bottom. I think it is around 5-6 or more years old.

Well those 2 fish are uber..... they have not died and like I said this tank has not been looked after for at least 3 years. When water level gets low +- 50% of tank I fill up with tap water. And that is it.

Pool filter sand can work well for planted tanks. Builders sells 40kg bags for something like R200! Hard to beat that price. You will have to rinse it thoroughly though. Root feeding plants won't get any nutrients from that though, so you will have to use root tabs and pick easier plants. Crypts, vallisneria and amazon swords grow well in mine.
