    Wow, that's looking great.
    But is that marine equipment I see in the photos?
    A tunze powerhead and a hang-on protein skimmer in the sump?

    Yes Whipmeyour very observant :party: the skimmer is out now i was playing with it to understand how a skimmer works. I was wondering how long it would be befor someone noticed it. as for the power head its acctually a sunsun powerhead 3000lph and yes i was playing around with it too :p busy investigating starting a marine tank :blink1: but found putting it on for about a minute every few days it keeps the floor gravel clean :idea: sort of like having a storm.

    i tested my skimmer with fresh water and it did not make any foam it only work with salt water.I think its a good idea with the power head ti will keep all the Debris from accumulating on the bottom.

    thats exactly what i was thinking cause it gets most of the detritus moving about giving the filter a chance to suck it up.

    It's too bad the protein skimmer doesn't work in the freshwater, it would make the cleanup so much easier!

    Here comes a noob question:

    What does the protein skimmer actually do? I know it's for marine set ups, that's why I've never bothered investigated it. But how does it "clean" water... I thought it just created protein in the water?

    The skimmer have a pump at the bottom that mixed water with air ,all the fish Pooh and wast products gets stuck to the bubbles, this bubbles will then over flow into the container with all the crap still stuck to it, and the clean water flow back to your tank.

    Basically it transports the waste via foam (which doesn't easily form in freshwater, could be something to do with oils) into the collecting cup at the top of the skimmer. It's something to do with molecular forces and the surface area of the bubbles. But yes, in essence it just pulls the waste out of the system before it has a chance to break down.

    Saltwater is denser than freshwater, that is the only reason why protein skimmers cant be used on freshwater aquariums.
