We have a drosera capensis that we umm cooked by trying to be clever. Luckily it's quite resilient and making a comeback

would you believe it's one of the only birds we saw, never mind heard, when we went on a 10 day trip to the Maputo Elephant reserve

They were all along the coast and while we never witnessed them fishing in the ocean, where we were staying there were no rivers so maybe in estuaries or the marsh?

That's on my bucket list of photos to take : A Fish Eagle rising off the surface of the water with a fish in its claws.

What was the Maputo Elephant Reserve like?
    Self drive like SA parks?

    Please post photos.

The Elephant reserve needs a comprehensive post.
I will have to find the external drive first, how about a lion on a rock in the meantime?

It was amazing and disappointing at the same time.
We saw one other camp site in April 2015 with GP (South African) plates. They had towed an enormous boat from Pretoria.

We entered Mozambique via the St Lucia border post which was a hotbed or corruption and bribery ("allegedly"). The drive from Johannesburg to the border took us about 6 hours, arriving before the border opened and then the next 100km took us another 6 hours on sand roads. In some places you could see the left over tar that was bombed in their civil war. (Apparently, there is now a Chinese built highway from Maputo to Ponta Do Oura).

It didn't take us long to realize we had purchased far too little refreshment at the last bottle store before the border. We would plan a day trip 4 hours each way for 40km to Santa Maria, a coastal village across the bay from Maputo, the day after arrival for replenishment of stock.

    SAM_0156.JPG

We packed scuba gear to dive in the bay near the camp site, one of the guys had been here before and discovered a nice reef in reasonably shallow water. We also had a small water craft that they used to fish behind the breakers.

    SAM_0159.JPG

Fishing was particularly good and we ate well but the highlight for me was using the boat to shuttle us out into the bay where a school of dolphins were engaging in some rough "breeding" behaviour. They didn't mind us being there or observing at all and we snorkeled among them for about 45 minutes, unfortunately it came as a bit of a surprise so we were unprepared (no under water housing on the beach/had to share wetsuits etc).

Sea life was good, didn't hear or see any wild life for 8 days, not even insects. Only when we were leaving the park again on the 2nd last day in Moz did we see some Zebra and Hippo. The brush around the beach had lots of enormous spiders so there must be some kind of bugs besides mosquitos but we didn't see them.

Don't know what it was but it was very tasty.

We took tents but the one guy brought his caravan along. We were grateful for the shower and extra vehicle to pack more gear but in the end it proved to be a pain after they hit a boulder and we needed to have it towed back to Jhb for repairs.

    @Marcel_73

    Thanks for the trip report.
Sounds like when one visits these remote locations, one needs to be well prepared and take plenty of extra supplies

I was interrupted by work and cut it short, if you want more photos etc I have lots still.

We went in a convoy of 3 bakkies, I would say it's essential to have 2 vehicles minimum and 3 is probably better in the wet season or if you want to tow anything bigger than a Venter.
