If they are relatively difficult to come by, it may be worth trying to breed them when I get my fish room up and running.
Do you need a group? Or is a pair enough?

There are rumours of pairs around. I personally think it is not likely though, people flat out lie at times on the internet that's why you need to be careful what you read.

Allot of guys are using 4ft tanks for breeding groups. Buy about 20 Tropheus so that you can strip a few excess males when they reach sexual maturity. Would be ideal if you can land up with about 16 in a 4ft give or take. Religous water changes, correct & stable water parameters will be all it takes after that. Oh yeah, I forgot! Patience!

Thank you Gerrit, appreciate your comment. Their colours are getting more striking by the day. In a year or so it will be great to look back at how the colours changed over time.

Made the mistake of the century!! I was really busy this weekend, so I decided to quickly do a really fast water change as I had lots of water on stand by. So I done the fastest 30% water change in history. Late sunday night I was feeding my fish and thinking "something just does not look right". I check the temprature, 23?

I still didnt click.... I check the plugs..... I didnt plug the extension cord back into the wall (IDIOOOOT)

Thank goodness I put the SEIO on a different plug! That was all that was running for a little more than 24 hours : ( If I didnt my whole tank would have been toast..... LUCK is all I can think of. Thank goodness.

I have been monitoring parameters and it seems like I might have dodged a tank crash. I was worried because there was no water flowing through the filter : (

To put the cherry on the cake, I only put in the SEIO 2 weeks ago.... Thank you Seio, I love you : )

So far so good sarf. No signs of bloat so far but usually the first sign I see is a floating fish so lets see. I must say, this group has been allot hardier than other groups I have kept in the past. Lets hold thumbs and hope that plays true! If I lose any fish Ill be really dissapointed in myself.... Such a stupid mistake!

@discusguy - Luckily you noticed in time.
I did this with one of my smaller tanks once. Did a water change in a rush, and then forgot to plug the electrics back in. Luckily I noticed it the next morning.

I noticed with my Mbuna when I had them, that a change in water temps, after a water change for eg, would often tempt them to breed.
Maybe the same will happen with your fish?

Luckily I noticed in time & luckily I had that seio! I am 100% certain that if it was not for that seio I would have lost a few if not all the fish.

I doubt I would be so lucky : ) They still too tiny. Another thing to consider is they have come from a lake with very stable parameters. Changes in parameters would just stress them out. Stress could cause bloat...

I tested the tanks ammonia last night. The ammonia levels are unreadable by the test kit but they are present. If I had to guess they should be 0.002 or somewhere in that region. Im just dosing some stability daily to try help the biological filtration recover a little. I'll be monitering it closly.

Fish seem to be fine : () For now...

    Thanks allot.

I have 1 X 54W Day HI-LIGHT JUWEL T5; 1 X 54W Nature HI-LIGHT JUWEL t5 in the pics. I have changed it now though. I am using 2 T5 HI-LIGHT day bulbs now. The nature bulb gave the water a funny green tinge which I was not very fond of.

I'm so happy, my Ikola's just spawned for the 1st time. Amazing how they still eat with those eggs in their mouth :)
Hope you have some metronidazole (metro) on hand, just in case.

That is awesome bud, congrats!!! I know it is crazy, there eggs are huge!!! Way bigger than what I am use too with fish anyway.
I do have metro on hand but I am yet to use it. I think it's safe to say that I am am out of the woods with last weeks scare : )
What size are your ikola's? How old are they? You have to post some pics sometime! Like, mmmaybe when you read this...lol

It's the same for all African Rift lake species.

I dont like bubbles. Ill never be caught with bubbles in any of my tanks. I use the flow from the filter and a Seio flow pump to agitate the waters surface to promote gasius exchange.

Latest pic of the tank. I changed the substrate from crushed dolomite to aragonite. The change made the water a little murky but it should clear in a day or 2. (I hope)

Looking good there - it looks like they're all getting along well, which is a good sign :) High hopes for many successful breedings on your side!
