Breeding can be very rewarding but.. can be heartbreaking at times too...
Unfortunately its the way it is if you serious about what you want to achieve
You are trying your best to do things right and i am sure you will succeed....

    The way I see it:

If you are going to keep the "problem" fish for yourself, then fine, by all means keep them.
But if they are going to go to other fish keepers, who knows what he will do with them? Just keep them? Or maybe breed and spread the defective genes.
I didn't want to be responsible for that. So I did the difficult thing and destroyed any fish that didn't look 100%.

@Reedfish going to do the same. This little one is not for sale or give away so it's fine. He has sentimental value to me, raised him from an egg because of his horrible parents and nearly killed him twice myself.

I've culled many fish so it's not a problem. It's like @MariaS also said, it's bad but it's part of it and it has to be done. When I cull do you think I must post about it or not as it could upset people?

I would throw culls in my 250 litre. Problem solved (if you've seen what I keep)

I considered discus but the effort is just too much for this lad with school, It's great to see that you're getting somewhere with breeding them! I'm planning on doing ancistrus as a first breeding project :)

It's to expensive raising discus to do that and you don't want those to end up in circulation.

Just an update. I've had two spawns with this pair so far, both where unsuccessful. What I did notice thought is that they are keeping the spawn site cleaner and pick the fluff off the white eggs. I've also dropped their temp to 28C, I read that it helps with male fertility so lets see if it helps. I started making RO water and using the waste to top up my aging barrel so I'm not wasting a drop, should have done this earlier but my poepholism was revving in the red.

They spawned yesterday but this morning it's a complete white wash again. I made some RO and are going to start doing wc's with it till I reach a KH of 1 and then use a 50\50 mix to keep it that way. Once they have done spawning I'll switch back to tap water. I have an extra barrel now so I can prep my water in advance and not eye ball it.

I'm also keeping a close eye on one of my other fish, I think it might be a male as it's going crazy with the shakes but not laying any eggs. Hopefully its a he and I can then rotate between the two to rest the other. Time will tell.

Other than having white eggs all the time, things are going great. My retard baby is almost 2 inches now and is eating the benkers like a piranha, I'm glad I don't have to hatch brine shrimp anymore for now and can save the eggs for a proper spawn later.

I must say that the two fish I got together now are much better at looking after the eggs, they clean properly now and attack and bite my hand if I get to close. The other female didn't bother to defend at all. This one flares and then bites me.
