Three weeks have passed so time for round 2.

I've chosen my biggest female for this try and placed her with my male this morning, so lets see.

    Here they are.

Haha yip, it happened with the other female too on my first try. Both I took out just as they started bowing, shacking and pairing off with the other females.

Sorry to hear that .... its not nice

However, you dont have to cull him if you dont have the heart.... if you can seperate him in a way that he cant breed then just leave him and see how it goes

I have a geo from one of the spawnings that Cesar's geos had....and he has no tail... looks too funny
Dont know if anyone accidently chomped it off or if its a birth defect but he was always one of the strongest and i didnt have the heart to cull him
We moved him to one of my tanks away from the other geos so there could be no breeding and you wont believe how big he is.. with no tail...
Its a pitty but... i guess its life....

Yes, I can't cull him. If it was say 10 out of a batch of 50 then sure it's for the best but not my first and only one. The sad part for me is that there's nothing else wrong, good shape good eye to body ratio, no short gill plates and perfect fins. He is also growing very well.

I've been doing a lot of thinking about it and will place him with the other when he is bigger. The thing is I don't know if it's genetic or my poor fry handling skills. I had 2 temperature problems when he was very small. The others didn't survive it but he did. That could have led to the deformaty.

The eggs that where laid yesterday has all gone white. I think they where a bit quick on the draw. Will see what the next batch of eggs does. I'll give them 3 maybe 4 tries and then rest them again. I couldn't make ro water because of our water situation.

They want to start implementing level 4 which means a 100l per person per day. That in it self will probably make my discus very sick or even kill them as thats the amount of water I use daily on my two discus tanks. If I can't clean their tanks there's going to be problems.

Sometimes being a softy as it's disadvantageous. I usually throw any deformed guppy fry in my adult tank some actually survived because the were too big for the adults to eat. I have 4 deformed fem guppies in my tank I don't have the heart or guts to cull. I don't remove them when they are about to give birth as the other fish eat the fry and so far non has survived.

I now use the deformed guppies to help cycle a tank but I do it as carefully as possible so that it doesn't harm them(I've never been able to successfully do a fishless cycle), I haven't lost one guppy in the cycling process yet.

@Reedfish I wouldn't keep a deformed fish in the future but this one is special to me. I used him as an experimental learning curve and now have to live with the consequences. If I saw it earlier I would have culled. a Missing pelvic fin was the last thing on my mind, was looking at the gills and other fins but now I know to look at the pelvic fins too.

Haha I'm very holy over this little one. Lots of resources went into him and alarms set to ungodly hours of the night to feed and check up. I don't name my fish at all but I am leaning towards making an exception on this little guy.

@Ladysphinx I've culled many guppies. The last one was over the weekend. It was the last one of my store bought ones. Shame she wasn't looking good so it was time.

@BoelderBeestie you're stronger than me I can feed them to other fish but can't kill them myself. How do you usually cull a guppy if I may ask.

I put them in the freezer. I don't want to feed them to my aro as it took me months to get him off superworm.

It's probably an option but I'm worried about it being a cruel death or do they go quickly?

I can't do the clove oil thing as you can see the fish. I normaly freeze them as well. In a plastic bag in the fridge door closed and walk away. Never easy to do it if it is a Rainbow that is almost as long as your hand.

No... as a 'breeder' you are right and believe me.. in my years i have had to euthanaze more than a tiny fish..... try a newborn puppy...

So.. dont get me wrong.. in serious breeding setups you should cull any offspring with deformaties and where deformaties occur perhaps change breeding partners to dilute whatever gene is pooling and causing the deformaties
If after that you still get high rates of deformaties from the same parents you should not use them for breeding anymore..

In circumstances where you not really seriously breeding and you pick up something small later on and you have where to put the little guy that will not interfere with your possible future spawns then yes.. i guess you can be a bit soft
For example my little geo was born in a community tank and i am prety sure his tail was chomped off...he is in a tank with no geos... no chance of any babies so... yes.. i was a bit soft.

Oh dear God @MariaS a puppy, no way that I'll be able to do that. I want to sell my fish so I'll have to cull, can't sell people bad fish, that's how you ruin everything. That 50+ spawn will be the happiest day of my life. That's also why I'm doing this publicly so people can see my dedication and willingness to learn and by the time I get this right I can breed some good quality discus for us locally. I'm putting all my spare time and money into this. I'll practice with my turks for the time being and do an import later down the line. I can grow them out now but those damned eggs are giving me nightmares hahaha. I also might have two pairs but it's not confirmed yet.
