Just a quick update. They little guy is still alive and I saw him destroy a bbs so he's eating them now. He's also starting to show awareness by looking at the bbs and chasing them down before he brutally kills and devours them, leaving nothing in his wake, not just aimlessly swimming around the sponge anymore. He's 6mm long now and starting to become rounder.

@WadeSmith I can't believe it either, would be cool if he made it in the end, I don't want to get my hopes up yet but so far he looks OK. One thing that getting my hopes up though is that he's not in drone mode anymore and starting to see and interact with his surroundings.

The heater in the fry tank stopped working last night, tank was at 22C this morning. Did a 40% WC with heated water and got it up to 26C and replaced the heater. It will be 30C again within the hour. Whats wrong with the heaters of today, this is the third one in 6 months for me now. The light still comes on but it doesn't heat. Hope my fish survives...

I agree on the heaters part . Mine refuses to keep to its 25 degrees setting . Manually putting it of . This is a marina. (6months old)The dophin I had it was in the game of tripping my power.
I am off the LFS to get "hopefully " a decent heater that will last me more than the above mentioned time

Wow thats some bad luck @BoelderBeestie. None of the heaters i have ever had has failed on me before(touch wood), Im the type that would normally buy the cheaper ones and like i said they have never failed on me before, with the one being a good couple of years old and still runs fine and keeps to the temp i set.

I really hope your little guy survives this, if he does then he is definitely going to be one hardy beast of a discus haha.

Yes me too, we can't have equipment failure to worry about as well and killing our fish. Going to upgrade all my tanks with jagers. I have one in my 1.8m and it works as advertised, you set the temp and it reaches that temp. With all the others you have to fiddle to get them right, you have to set them to 32C to get a tank to 29C, and adding more doesn't help. I've got 2 300W's in a 250 and it's the same story. One 300W jager in a 540L tank and it keeps the temp perfectly even in winter. Each month I'll replace a heater till all the tanks are done as they are not cheap but I guess you get what you pay for.

@WadeSmith I also never had issues with heaters till the last 6 months, I've always had to set them a bit higher to get temp but thought they where just not calibrated correctly. Wait a minute, I've lost 4 not 3. 2 boyu digitals and 2 glass 50W's. The one in my oscar tank is also a cheap 300W but it's been working fine for more than 2 years now and is set to 26 and stays at 26.

If my baby survives he's probably going to set a new standard in stunting haha. Going to give the LFS's a run for their money with this one...

Does the sponsors stock Jagers heaters or where did you buy yours. I got a heart attack when I saw the 300 watt eheim heater price .

( cautiously looked for a camera or tv of some sort in the heater with that price tag)

Just want to put my 2c worth in here.

Go and buy a small UPS and run all equipment through that. That will take the spikes and dips and your equipment will last longer. For about a year it will also be your backup power but after that the batteries will die, BUT it will still take the shots before your equipment, which in my unprofessional opinion about the matter.
No politics, but eskom is killing all our electrical equipment with their antics.

@Lysine hahaha yip they are expensive hey. a 150w will keep a 300L up to temp where a cheap 300w will have trouble.

@Wilhelm I also thought about a ups but I don't think it will handle heaters. You can't connect a heating element to a ups, it triggers the safety when it pulls more power than what the ups can provide. Even a small thermal slip printer knocks it out. We have some at work, I never tested it with a aquarium heater though. Now I've got an experiment for next week.

Mine is running on one, but must say it is not the smallest of one...1000va or 2000va UPS, can't remember the size now. Pulling the heater, twin air pump, light and dophin 1600 on mine and not tripping.
    600va might struggle....hope i got the units right...lol

The 1kva and above would be fine but we only have the 600va at the office. I'll test a 50w on it and see if it holds.

Yeah exactly, I'm waiting for my PC to die on me but luckily for me, it has Surge Protection enabled through the motherboard BIOS (Asus) - it's gone through so many power surges and lightning storms, I'm surprised it's still standing. A year or two ago, we had a bad lightning strike on the roof here - most equipment blew but not my desktop PC. The washing machine, gas heater and several other items got blown by the lightning strike.

Hi boelderbeestie, how's your little chap doing?
I can't get passed the wriggler stages, had the wrigglers for 4 days, they looked strong and there where about 20 of them, went to bed last night and thought this morning I would see some free swimmers but this morning all 20 where gone, I am sure the parents ate them. I will give them another chance to raise their young and then will try your method.

@Adhil your hatch rate is much better than mine. There's another contraption that I'm checking out that looks like it might work better. The little one is doing great and eating his fill every feeding. Will try and get a pic but he's too fast now.
