I don't use RO water at all and all of mine are doing pretty good . Shrimps babies is very small so you will have to remove them from the filter daily. I cleaned my canister a few weeks ago , I removed about 10 adults and more than 20 3mm size shrimps from it , same goes for HOB and also my diy inside tank filter the same, just much easier to catch the babies .

Normal sponge filter is good enough, or just use a pre filter on your HOB or canistor.

Only reason I use RO water is because I have an RO unit at home.
But I mix the water with normal aged water.

Fudge... All my shrimp died yesterday.
Did a waterchange, they started acting all weird, And in 5 min, dead... So last time I tried. Now going to keep the tank as a planted tanks, or rather propagation tanks

No idea what I did wrong.
Used RO water, with 3mm of Prime in and pH- to get the pH on 6.5.
    Think they were Cherry Shrimp.

Maybe the container storing the water has been contaminated?

Bugger, sorry to hear that. Maybe something to do with extra chemicals in the water from the public holiday. I have heard of people having these sudden death issues when doing water changes on or near to public holidays. Apparently extra chemicals are dosed into the water around these days.

Ouch! So sorry for your loss!

I had the same experience once. I did a water change and all of a sudden my shrimp started acting strange. I immediately caught them and dumped them in the tank next to it - on which I also just did a water change with no problems. I was lucky, they survived.

Weekends and public holidays are not a good time to do water changes because as @MattLamm mentioned, they treat the plants on these days. As @mattie also mentioned, they are very sensitive to water conditions and it has to be pretty perfect.

Don't give up, they're very rewarding to keep, but I think it's going to be a while before we see them in the trade again. They'll be keeping an eye on the imports now.

If you're interested, I can pm you the number of someone in Hatfield that breeds them for a bit of extra cash. About R5 cheaper per shrimp that what you've paid.

    Let me know.

Ps: I do smaller, daily changes on my tank, maybe give that a go next time.
