My discus tank thread.

New ones.

The two new fish are doing okay - now the new blueish one is the bully!





Hope they will survive.

I am selling some of my bonsai and when coming back from holiday, I do want to buy some good quality young fish - even if a have to drive a few kilometers to get them!

Just got home from holiday, all the fish seems to be okay. I have measured out the food so it was easy for the person who looked after my tanks. I left on the lights - too much algae growth! Will clean it up a bit tomorrow.

I did saw some nice discus in Amazimtoti and Margate, but I did not buy any.

Record temperatures!

Just lowered the temperature in my discus tank to 32 degrees Celcius - went up to 35 today!



Some of my outside guppy tanks went up to 38 degrees Celcius at 14:00!

 

Also got home and added a few ice blocks to the tanks.

 

Its been almost as bad in the South.... My tanks including the 1000l tank were 31.5 at 6am today.. I have my heaters plugged off and I had fans on all night!!!!

When I got home this afternoon it was at 32 and I had left fans on all day!!!

I hope we get a break from this heat soon....

 

My tanks were sitting on 34 had to pack blue gel cooler packs in ,damage already done 2 emperors and a glowlight had succumbed ,tanks only dipping about a degree each ,all heaters plugged out , lets hope this heat relents a bit.

Last night i lifted all my power heads right to the surface of the water to create more surface movement and oxigenate the water more even though I do have airstones as well...
Its terrible to sit at work and wonder if all is ok at home!!
At least there is a bit of a cooler breeze out our way today s hopefully we in for a bit of a break from the heat>>> think we all need to do the 'rain dance'!

 

This moss is growing on most of my rocks in the tank - it looks great moving in the water current:

Nice planted tank, but a Bare Bottom Tank is better for Discus especially for younglings and according to the Stentker Philosophy you should keep no less than a shoal of ten. In my opinion; it's better to keep Discus on their own without other tank-mates...

 

I am relaxed when it comes to the Discus. They will have to survive in my conditions because the planted tank is important to me. Because of external factors, like power cuts and load shedding, I will probably loose them one day. I have always wanted Discus, but the fever has subsided - I do not want them to become "sleepless nights".

 

How are the original discus in this tank doing?

 

The two blue ones from the first buy are doing well. One visible in the pic. The two striped ones are from the second buy - the one posted is doing very well, but the other one is....okay.
